He probably saw where the Islanders are dominating in most sports and didn't want to take the heat for those beatdowns the next several years.

Or facing possible NCAA sanctions.

If I remember right the same thing happened at UNO when they jumped to D1. At least for Commerce they aren't dropping football to make the move. I still feel bad for the UNO wrestling team as they had won the D2 title right before being cut as a program.
