Given the bad weather last Saturday we had a great crowd. Nice crowd of visitors from Mankato too. 2876 is really good for a D2 game in a town of 13,000

SMSU home openers since 2008 (season average in parentheses)
2008: 3398 (2420)
2009: 3134 (2671)
2010: 2876 (2335)
2011: 3876 (2755)
2012: 2432 (2205)
2013: 3211 (2939)
2014: 2884 (2454)
2015: 3231 (3252)
2016: 2912 (2410)
2017: 2401 (2448)
2018: 2877 (1786)
2019: 2876
For those who don't know, 2008 was the opening of the new stadium. For comparison, here are attendance numbers for home openers prior to 2008.
2007: 2781 (1789)
2006: 2678 (1753)
2005: 2891 (1843)
2004: 2987 (1399)
2003: 1543 (1233)
2002: 3231 (1410)
2001: 1214 (1215)
2000: 2543 (1963)
That's a pretty steady season-long uptick in the new digs, even if the season openers are comparable. Last fall's cold spell no doubt played a role in the lower average attendance (41/rainy and 20), but otherwise it's a pretty consistent improvement.

BSU has drawn okay for their home opener the last few years. The years BSU holds their community appreciation event in conjunction with the opener, attendance is higher. This year, BSU has already held their community appreciation event the first week of the school year.

In regards to last year, the last couple of weeks were brutal weather-wise. Had I not committed myself to attending every home game, I wouldn't have gone. Easily the worst weather I've ever watched a football game in.

MSUM has been getting better.
Those really down years from 2008-2013 or so didn't help at all. That was around the time I was going to Moorhead and there wasn't much to cheer for. With football being competitive now and more wins coming every season attendance has scratched and clawed its way back up.
The Scheels Field remodel has certainly made Nemzek nicer and the opening crowd for the game when the work was done was 3,818. Last year's biggest crowd was vs UM Crookston with 2,737. Unfortunately the home season finale with a trip to the Mineral Water Bowl on the line was hit by a snow storm. Of course MSU also has to compete for attendance with NDSU and Concordia in the FM area, too.
