That was embarrassing.

I'm kind of excited to see what sort of excuses we'll get, though. That should be fun... albeit, the only acceptable one (in my opinion) is that it was an active decision to send the Beavers home with a win after our homecoming game.

I get that school morale, loyalty, spirit etc., kind of wains when you attend a school like SMSU, but good god can't we at least have a little pride in ourselves? It's homecoming for godsakes...

His record (especially against the south) is horrible, extremely high turn-over of coaches, and worse is the continual transfer and just plain quitting of players. The NSIC will consider cutting SMSU when pigs learn how to freeze hell over. There's absolutely no logical reason they would consider doing that just because our football team isn't great. You make it sound like we're the worst team in history, which is far from the truth. Why come into our thread and say something like that? What kind of response are you hoping to get?

Also, would you mind elaborating on that weird beef you have with our coach? I could go ahead and pull up stat after stat to prove how he's objectively one of the better coaches in SMSU history, but I don't think that will do much good here.

I do not understand going for it on 4th down instead of punting the ball on the last possession. Also, don't try to make a substitution from all the way across the field- the big lineman can't make that sprint in time. Don't do the work of the other team for them.

SMSU should never be cut from the league. But I'm concerned about Sauter's future and the number of so many GA's as position coaches. I know it's a budget issue but with another loss like this (along with the high turnover rate of players & coaches), I wonder what's the long-term future/plans for the program.

The last few drives looked like a easy 7 on 7 tourney and resembled the Wayne St. loss. I have no idea how a WR got that open in the middle of the field, BEHIND DEFENDERS, on the last play. I wonder about the team morale after this sting.

Who would have thought they would ever be up 24-0 in that game? In Sauter's radio interview, he didn't want to talk about the silver lining in the game (except with the quarterback). I guess I find that a little concerning and am hoping it was just emotions talking, otherwise the St Cloud game will be pretty tough indeed. The turnover of coaches imo is most likely the key to turning the program around. If the coaches aren't buying into the program (and each other), how do they expect the players to do so with a revolving door of coaches each year? Perhaps the NCAA should make it just as difficult for coaches to transfer as they do for the players.

From what I've seen, SMSU is a stop on the career path for a lot of coaches. I don't monitor other small schools but I am guessing that's the norm.

I don't know about the transferring players. Academically, SMSU is a tougher school than most people think, and Marshall isn't -that- great of a town (sorry)... so maybe that has something to do with it.

This discussion seems to come up about once a year or so. I think we're going to have to get lucky to get some guys that want to plant roots in the community and believe in the program, and aren't just looking for a line on a resume.

Coaches come 'n go. Seems to be the nature of the business. But it is an extremely tight-knit fraternity and few of the dedicated ones are out of a job very long. It's not what ya know it's... GAs, I believe, are usually around for 2 years tryin' to get their Master's. After 2 years I'd guess they'd know if it's the field they want to pursue. I don't know about the FT guys but would guess they're year-to-year. And even then there are times when that's too long. ;-)

On a quasi-unlrelated note, I checked in on Darveau to see where he's at. He always stuck with me because he went to Florida after his time here I believe.

Turns out he's now at the "other" USF.

We basically have the money for 3 full-time spots, with the rest being GAs. That really hasn't changed in Sauter's time here. Let's take a look at what we've had for coaches in Sauter's 10 seasons here.....

Guenther was DC here for 8 years. Strop last year. Now McClure in his first year.

Darveau was the first OL coach, spent 4 years FT under Sauter. Frana came in for 4 years. Hiller now in his second season.

Danilo Robinson spent 1 year as LBs/recruiting coordinator. When he left, Kerr came in as LBs coach and special teams, spent 4 years here. Mike Aldrich then took that FT spot, and was here for 2 years. After Aldrich left, Ricky Thomas came in for a year. Now Bullerman is in his second season.

It's really only the one FT spot that has seen constant turnover. The other two seem to be pretty normal turnover rates, I believe. It just seems higher probably because we just recently had changes there. The rest of the staff is GAs, which obviously will shuffle in and out every couple of years.

Fully agree with your take on this. The recent turnover has made it seem worse.

I think Cory does a very good job with what he's got (Marshall, less scholarships, less tradition, etc)....they have been pretty decent offensively, but need to become more solid defensively..and Sauter is an offensive guy.

Was the loss bad..obviously. But they were up 24-0 in the first place....which I didn't expect. There wasn't a lot coming back this year for SMSU and they've been respectable.
