  • NSIC Numbers and Minutiae

I am a fan and stats, facts, tidbits etc... Starting a thread to be a catch-all for any numbers you think are interesting.

Three NSIC Overall Champions this season:

    Minnesota Duluth: 21st NSIC Championship, 1st since 2018, 25th overall (3 MIAC & 1 NCC), 12th Playoff Appearance, 15th Postseason Appearance (3 MWBs)

Bemidji State: 6th NSIC (& overall) Championship, 1st Since 2006, 1st Ever NCAA Playoff Appearance (and 1st Win, congrats!), 3rd Postseason Appearance (2 MWBs)

    Augustana: 1st NSIC Championship, 9th Overall (7 SDIC, 1 NCC) 1st since 1959, 8th Playoff Appearance, 10th Postseason Appearance (2 MWBs)

Most NSIC Championships after 2021 season:
Minnesota Duluth 21 Division Titles 12
Minnesota State Mankato 21 Division Titles 9
Winona State 18 Division Titles 1
St. Cloud State 15 Division Titles 1
    Minnesota State Moorhead 14
    Michigan Tech 7
Bemidji State 6 Division Titles 3
    Minnesota Morris 6
Northern State 3 Division Titles 1
    Concordia-St. Paul 2
    SWMSU 1
    Augustana 1 Division Titles 3
Sioux Falls 1 Division Titles 2
Wayne State 0 Division Titles 1

On the minutiae front, something I find remarkable is Winona State:
    -18 Conference Championships
    -6 NCAA Playoff Appearances
    -1 NAIA Playoff Appearance
    -4 Mineral Water Bowl Appearances

    Overall record: 449-478-25!!

If you take away all of Sawyer's seasons and the last 2 years of the Hosier era, they still have 8! Conference Championships, but their record drops to 232-377-24.

That is a remarkably bad record for a program with so much success at this level!

In case you were wondering, UMD's all-time record is 545-276-24.

    SMSU All-Time: 203-342-5

    NAIA Playoffs: 1987, 1990

    MWB: 2013

    NCAA Ranked Opponents Beat: 1

We also only have one head coach with a winning record. Gary Buer 70-69-1

I remember going to games in Sawyers early days, stadium was a shell of what it is now. Pretty sure the visitor side bleachers were the temporary ones that only had 3 levels and maybe sat 20 people per. You entered the stadium through the baseball field, the entrance used to be right under the home side on the 50 yard line.

        NSUs first season was 1902

        Overall 580-417-34 (including this year)
        NSIC 167-153-2 (including this year)

Similar to the basketball records, it's really funny to see who these teams played in the early 1900s.

For more, in depth browsing including by season season by coach, they've got it all.

Lots of fun tidbits such as Northerns loan victory over South Dakota State was in 1922 by a score of 12-0 (Wikipedia has Northern losing to SDSU by the same score however) South Dakota State won the conference in their first year as a member.

The NCC included South Dakota, South Dakota State, Des Moines, Nebraska Weslyan, North Dakota Agricultural (NDSU), St. Thomas, Creighton and Morningside.

SMSU's first season in 1968 included games against Pillsbury Baptist College (no longer open), Milton College (no longer open) and UND-Ellendale (rebranded as Trinity Bible College, no more football).

Program's first game came against USF, a 13-6 loss.
