Yes, that is Germans from Russia. The Nebraska area has more Volga area Germans, whereas the Dakota Germans from Russia were more from the Black Sea area. So in the Dakotas, you're more likely to see Fleischkuekla on the menu in the locally-run restaurants. The different settlement areas wound up with different versions of ethnic food.

If you are on JV, you probably didn't choose the school for the sport. It's more likely that you liked the school enough to go there, and the JV team presented an opportunity to keep playing the sport.

I pulled up a JV men's basketball roster from two years ago.....every player on the JV roster was from North Dakota, western Minnesota, or eastern Montana. While exceptions are possible, I would safely assume that it wasn't dreams of basketball success that put UJ on their radar as a college option. It's not like we're talking about athletic scholarships drawing them there over other programs either.

The only exception would be if the JV teams were littered with overseas players from Europe, Russia, South America, etc. Those are examples where the sport is probably what drew them to the university.

For one thing, UJ operated a great VB program in the NAIA. It's not a stretch to assume that some contingent of the roster was interested in participating to get a look from varsity and felt it was a better route than going JUCO. JV programs are usually staffed by varsity coaches, so it makes sense.

For another - a lot of these athletes probably chose UJ because they had an opportunity to play. These kids spent their entire lives playing these sports and don't stop loving them deeply simply because they didn't get a varsity offer. Every school offers intramurals, but not every school offers a chance to continue competing on a traveling team and that's valuable to some. They absolutely factored it into their college decision. Sports is more than just scholarships and varsity offers - some people genuinely enjoy playing the sports they poured all that time into and actively look for opportunities to continue while they still can.

It's obviously hard to know what each student thinks here without talking to them directly - but it's also not wrong to say that students factor in opportunities offered to them by a school, athletic or otherwise, that having those opportunities taken away would cause someone to reconsider enrollment, and that limiting opportunities limits the potential reach (and enrollment) of a university. Small schools know this and offer programs for this purpose - to attract students.

You nailed it. Living in a town with 2 Runza restaurants, when my daughters come from MN/IN they want Runza, so I will have one along with their excellent onion rings. When it comes to fast food I'm a Arby's guy.

Oh yeah! I'll take a roast beef and cheddar over a hamburger anyday. And potatoes cakes, l like those more than fries. I always ring the bell satisfied on the way out.

I've only been to one at the D2 level and it was basketball, the 2013 WVIAC tournament in Charleston, WV. I used to be an Alderson Broaddus Battlers fan before they closed the school. So I elevated my second team Western New Mexico Mustangs to my top spot and now I'm riding the Jamestown bandwagon for awhile to support them on this board after the pounding they got earlier in this thread. I've never been to Jamestown, but Louis L'Amour came from there and I love his books.

I go to a handful every year - being a dual alum means there's a lot of ground to cover. I did volleyball, women's basketball, and baseball this year - as well as DI hockey. I'd like to do softball next year. Usually go to the men's basketball tournament but wasn't able too this year.

A lot of it plays out within 60 miles of where I live - so that helps.

I was curious about the JV schedules with no games listed while the Varsity schedules were listed so I emailed the AD at Jamestown and asked about it. He got back to me and said they're planning to drop the JV programs now that they're D2. That's what I suggested to you. So put that in your chocolate milk and drink it. ;)
