  • Interesting way to look at the NSIC All Sports Award would be to look at the Overall score and average it out based on amount of sports offered. Wouldn't be 100% clarity with some sports sponsored by few schools but still...
    1. Minnesota State - 11.28
    2. Augustana - 10.17
    3. St. Cloud State - 8.17
    4. Winona State - 7.93
    5. Concordia - St. Paul - 7.59
    6. Sioux Falls - 7.47
    7. UMD - 7.39
    8. Mary - 6.97
    9. Wayne State - 6.86
    10. Northern State - 6.33
    11. MSU Moorhead - 6.31
    12. SMSU - 5.09
    13. Minot State - 4.84
    14. Bemidji State - 4.5
    15. UMC - 4.27

    • With the amount of topics in this thread I'm calling it the junk drawer. We go take out menus, dead batteries, screws to something, a couple dried out pens, soy sauce packets, and a can koozie from your insurance agent.

Some might call this an apt comparison since they might believe Jamestown itself is nothing more than a collection of junk....

My only experience of North Dakota was driving from Winona and Williston and back in about 28 hours. Longest 28 hours of my life.

            • The GAC has an all-sport trophy based on a school's percentage of total potential points in the sports they sponsor. Mary sponsors all NSIC sports and finishes 4th based on total points but is passed by Winona State, Concordia-St. Paul, and Minnesota-Duluth when based on the percentage. This would indicate that Winona State, for example, performed better overall than Mary in the sports sponsored by Winona State as opposed to Mary getting extra points just because they sponsor sports Winona State does not. Jamestown will sponsor all NSIC sports. Here's the NSIC calculation for 2024-25:
              Minnesota State-Mankato .912 196
              Augustana .821 176.5
              St. Cloud State .651 95
              Winona State .634 111
              Sioux Falls .626 134.5
              Concordia-St. Paul .607 119
              Minnesota-Duluth .588 103.5
              Mary .584 125.5
              Wayne State College .539 96
              Minnesota State-Moorhead .526 101
              Northern State .516 95
              Southwest Minnesota State .413 81
              Minot State .395 77.5
              Bemidji State .361 58.5
              Minnesota-Crookston .318 47

Not happening any time soon. BSU is cutting programs and professors, trying to make up a deficit. There are calls by non-sports people to cut the hockey program and the current president is taking a lot of heat in the media about not being out in the open with all of this.

Women's sports will always struggle at BSU as it is not a town/location that really has a lot to offer to female students not from the area. How soccer has been able to do it, the other women's programs need to get on that wagon. And with hockey not being counted in the NSIC All-Sports standings, that hurts them as well.

I like this method as well. Makes it a bit cleaner. It still makes me mad that St. Cloud and UMC get away with being in the conference with no football, but there are obviously other schools that really need to step their game up in terms of sponsorships and competitiveness

Well, I guess all we are needing at this point is for Duluth, and St. Cloud to get off their high horse. Then get Jamestown, Minot, and Mary to get hockey up and running at D1.

I wonder if the CCHA/NSIC schools could get Jamestown/Minot/Mary to join and manage to scrounge up the votes to force UMD and SCSU into the NSIC, kinda like how the Big Ten was formed...once a 6th member was found the conference officially sponsored it?

Hmmmm..... Duluth, Bemidji, St. Cloud, Mankato, Augustana, Jamestown, Mary, Minot...... I wonder if bringing in Michigan Tech would reduce their travel? They are D-II as well.

Minot, Mary and Jamestown all have ACHA D-I teams. Minot and Mary always seem to put out very competitive teams and have solid fan bases with decent barns. I know less about Jamestown other than their rink is older/smaller.

It is a huge jump from ACHA D-I to NCAA D-I financially, and I would guess none of these three schools want to start dumping money into a NCAA program unless a HUGE benefactor leaves a lot of money for it.

Duluth and St. Cloud would never leave the NCHC. St. Cloud crawled on their hands and knees begging to not be left with the old WCHA/CCHA teams. Duluth was a power, but has struggled some here lately, but not enough to leave the prestige that jersey patch gets. Plus, if this conference formed, it would not have a seat at the D-I rules table as there are no fully D-I schools, so that would be a drawback. At least the current CCHA gets to at least sit at the table due to Bowling Green.

Sorry, kind of rambled all over the place. I guess it was my "junk drawer" post.

I heard a rumor that mens and women’s wrestling was a consideration because it wouldn’t affect Title IX since the numbers would be equal. It might also be a big pipe dream that some cauliflower ear dude came up with?

For me, at any level, the all sports award is something I don’t pay any attention to or care about.

                        • On a separate note, related to the junk drawer…my understanding is the Jimmies have a JV volleyball team…does anyone in the NSIC do this? If not, I’d assume they will compete against other NAIA JV squads?

I’d imagine they won’t want to be dumping scholarships into the second tier players, but maybe they have the $

I saw that Dakota State and a number of other NAIA do the same for volleyball. They will be in a tournament in Sioux City this August- while the varsity is playing in one location, the JV will be playing a couple of miles away at another. If it gets more people into your school.............

To my knowledge, no other NSIC school has JV teams for NCAA eligible sports. The NSIC and the NCAA have scholarship limits that are a lot tighter than the NAIA, so I can't see JV players getting athletic aid. I am sure there will still be creative academic/need based aid that will be used (as all schools do).

I haven't heard that, it would be interesting but I just can't see it right now with the financial climate at BSU unless some big benefactor is financing it.

The funny thing is, BSU was a wrestling and swimming power back in the day, along with Nordic skiing and women's field hockey. But in the late 80s, those programs all got axed when the move from NAIA to NCAA was happening at the school.
