Correct. It was at a point where you played every conference opponent in football twice - home and away. This was set in motion with Presentation closing. Viterbo and Bellevue didn't have football -- so while the conference was strong and competitive and sustainable in all other sports, it was not in footballOriginally posted by Matt Witwicki View Post
I can't agree with this.
The North Star was falling apart and a league where teams had to play each other twice and all that fun of a tiny league. It was only a matter of time before that league had to fold. UJ was also a geographic outpost in the GPAC..so they were in a bad spot in terms of having a conference home that would work long term. When UJ got the ball rolling for D2, the Frontier East wasn't a thing..and that isn't a good thing for the NStar teams anyway with the wild travels they'll have out west.

How does Dakota State have a higher ceiling? They are comparable. Madison is 6000 people Jamestown is 15,000. I will say DSU has more students on campus, but that's it.Originally posted by SW_Mustang View Post
I wish we could have taken DSU over UJ. The Trojans have a much higher ceiling and are in a better location geographically. Alas.
Actually really enjoyed my visit down there last year. That was fun.

Advantage Jamestown; Great location for schools in northern half of conference. nice facilities and school vision.Originally posted by MrMustang View Post

Advantage DSU; Robust school with 3700 students, nationally recognized cyber security program, computer technology degrees, nice facilities, city is surrounded by glacial lakes.

Academics, alumni base, campus investments... is UJ planning an indoor facility? That stuff matters.Originally posted by MrMustang View Post

Far better location too. Closer to Sioux Falls than Jamestown is to Fargo....
Just my opinion. I've been to DSU several times and I'm impressed with them. UJ? Not as impressed.

I do give them credit for gettin ahead of the game for cyber security and compter stuff. In Minnesota if we tried to add those at SMSU it would take a decade of study and meeting to even discuss it. DSU just went ahead and did it and it does get lots of students on campusOriginally posted by vikingfaithful View Post

Fair points. I find it intertesting a town of 6000 is NSIC worthy when you think Marshall, Jamestown, Minot, Bemdiji etc which are bigger arent that niceOriginally posted by SW_Mustang View Post

I couldn't care less about Madison. Minot is way to big for you, unless you suddenly like towns bigger than Marshall.Originally posted by MrMustang View Post

In fact our Computer Science department is extremely qualified and robust. Obviously not on DSU's level, but DSU doesn't have the burden of agriculture programs like we've saddled ourselves with either.Last edited by SW_Mustang; 08-29-2025, 12:49 AM.

First of all, now I think you're the one confusing posters, as that sounds like it should be more directed at me than MrMustang from my memory.Originally posted by SW_Mustang View Post

But now to the real point, I have never said that I don't like towns bigger than Marshall. Sure, I wouldn't live in one myself, as even Marshall has become too big for my tastes at times. But that has more to do with the town culture over population. We prefer going to Watertown over Marshall for our shopping, for example, despite Watertown being about 10k bigger.
I'm not saying "don't allow any schools from towns bigger than Marshall" as a reason for or against any program. It's not part of the discussion for me. That's the point I keep wanting to get across.
I think the worst thing you can do as a conference is to be restrictive about which programs can or cannot join. I don't eliminate any program based on enrollment, town population, on field success, or scholarship money, unless you're willing to pare down the current conference teams along with it. Because that's what those kinds of restrictions are signaling to current conference members. Not big enough? Not rich enough? Not good enough? Better start looking for other conferences, if you start blocking new programs from joining.Last edited by Stanger86; 08-29-2025, 12:28 PM.

On the bolded - if the subtext here is that denying Jamestown would have sent a message to SMSU, I was never worried about it. The two institutions don't share much in common. Now - all conferences have standards and restrictions. Even the "come as you are" conferences have them baked in somewhere. Just allowing anyone to go where they want too would create a lot of instability and chaos. It's kinda why we have conferences and divisions in the first place, and levels of organization across all sports beyond college.
I think Jamestown should be allowed to have sports, and I still stand by my opinion that they weren't the absolute worst option - but I think there was plenty of reason to tell them "no."Last edited by SW_Mustang; 08-30-2025, 08:20 AM.
