I know a number of local guys from Buffalo Lake and Hector who go out to Lake Oahe in SD. Also a bunch who go up to Canada. Meanwhile, Lakes Allie and Preston are about eight miles north of town. And a number of Iowegians come up here.

There are actual a large amount of glacial lakes in Northeast SD, they just aren't surrounded by folks from the cities so it's probably a little more peaceful 😉Originally posted by laker View Post

I was out of line for calling you an embarrassment, but it wasn't in reference to complimenting the league's best player.Originally posted by SW_Mustang View Post
Last week I was an "embarrassment" for complimenting another team's QB, this week there are "more important things in life."
It was the way you said "Good news is the Dragons should be able to relax next week, maybe get the backups some playing time." Which I guess turned out to be pretty accurate. Even so, I shouldn't have let it get under my skin like it did.

The Glacial Lakes region of northeast South Dakota is an underrated area. It's fun to knock anything and everything between I-29 and the Black Hills, but that area is fun to drive through at least.Originally posted by SW_Mustang View PostI drove from Fargo to Aberdeen once and happened across a handful of lakes in NE SD (?). Seemed like a nice little area. There's also Brant Lake near Madison that's pretty nifty, though I was only there once.

I was venting, sarcastically. It wasn't directed at you, nor was it intended to be anything more than just venting. I came into the fold at the height of the Sauter years and the downward slide has been... tough... especially given some of the guys that have come through our program.
There are more important things in life than Division II football, absolutely. SMSU football is what I have for 11 weeks a year when those other things take a toll, and I think most of us are the same way. I also wouldn't have many of those truly important things without SMSU, even some of the more trivial things that I value like my relationship to MSU.
I think you're a good dude and I'm sorry for piling it on. SMSU means a lot to both of us, and I'm sure we both want what's best for it, even if we don't always agree on the methods.Last edited by SW_Mustang; 09-08-2025, 11:28 PM.

Yeah, it was pretty cool. I'd never been and wasn't expecting it. I wish I had more time to explore, but I had to get to Northern for the kickoff, so I appreciated what I could and continued on down.Originally posted by Stanger86 View Post

My mom's family is from West River - Sturgis area. We used to visit my great grandma for a week every summer. I haven't been in 20+ years (good lord I'm getting old). One of those things ya take for granted as a kid, now I'd give anything to go back. We're talking about planning a camping trip out that way in the coming years.
it's a bit flat for me in my section two miles west of I-29, but I went beyond to Manchester once to see it, then to Huron. That was a fun drive. Huron had a lot of Fagan-branded vehicles out of Granite Falls that day. Also miss my office in Watertown. Never lived there, but it was always a treat to go work up there when I did.

The Fort Sisseton Historical Festival is awesome. The need reenactment characters and my kids think that's in my future. I met one this year and he was actually the band director at SDSU for his career. Told me he actually started at Northern but they made cuts and he had to transfer to SDSU. Another tale of how small moments play a significant role in life.Originally posted by Stanger86 View Post

Sica Hollow in the fall is incredible.
Roslyn has the International Vinager Museum (hard pass for me)
Purple Cow in Waubay has great ice cream and also sells Jorgenson Meats which has the best bacon you'll ever find.
Pickeral Lake Lodge has great Pickeral Ice Teas.
Nicollet Tower is pretty neat.
For the adventure seekers, Sand Lake has a tower as well but it never felt safe.
The Waubay fish hatchery does tours which is pretty interesting.
Always lots to do in a area with not a lot of population.

I know this is out of left field, but given that it was a previous topic in this thread it has to be mentioned - but Ranch 'n Roost in Sioux Falls quickly became a favorite burger stop last night.
It's out by Lake Lorraine, kinda tucked in between the Hyatt and a high rise apartment complex. Good food, not insanely expensive.

Fort Sisseton is a beautiful well preserved fort. Wish I could there for festival. The horse stable has nice stone work, quarried from local rock. People were tough back then.
Sica hollow is a very large forest with a lot of sugar maple trees. I collected seeds and now have 2 in my yard 30yrs. old and with spectacular fall colors.
Lots of camping and RV sites in the area. NSU4LIFE did an excellent job of describing the area.
Been a while, Some farmer offered horse back rides through the hills and woods, my kids and wife really enjoyed it.
Noted many of our good neighbors from Minnesota visiting the area.
