New Ulm also has a Cashwise on the north end and a HyVee at the south end. Oh, an Aldi close to Walmart. Same in Hutch- Aldi and Walmart and across the street from each other, with Cashwise a little further north.
We used to go to New Ulm a lot - lunch at Bonanza, then across the street to Target or HyVee, finish up at Marketplatz Mall, and maybe stop into Nicklasson Athletic as a treat. Despite the mall essentially being dead - downtown is still a very vibrant area. I was there Saturday and it looks like they dumped a ton of money into the ballpark. It looks great.

We'd make trips to our shop over there for work - rule was get the work done as efficiently as possible so we could take our lunch at Taco John's, then stop at Menards on the way out of town. Fun memories.

There is a Taco Johns a couple blocks from the high school I went to. Before a basketball game freshman year a couple teammates decided to eat the 6 pack and a pound meal before the game. That surprisingly didn't go over well for them. For those not familiar its a 6 pack of hard sheel tacos and a pound of potato oles.

Eating as a HS boy remains undefeated.

We would frequent the local Pizza Ranch buffet during two-a-days back in HS. Not sure how we survived that afternoon/evening practice after loads of buffalo chicken pizza for lunch, but we did. Sure wish their buffet was $6.36 again for lunch. It was the good ol days and we didn't even know it pre-Funzones, Kirk Cousins sponsorships, and nationwide expansion.

Oof - best case scenario that's a dense meal to take into a basketball game. Worst case scenario... ouch. I like Taco John's though. Handful of times we'd go grab a bag of Oles. One of the best creations.

We lived off of gas station food - especially SuperAmerica. If timed just right, we'd get there when they cleaned off the roller grill and sometimes they'd have the bounty up at the counter. Workers never minded giving that bundle away.

One of them was a lead singer in a death metal band - but in southwest Minnesota. Kinda wonder what happened to that guy. Gas station workers are the best.

Our Pizza Ranch ruled - it had a proper pre-Fun Zone arcade (but no longer does). Also had a TV. At one time they sold sports cards behind the counter.

My go to meal before games was to head to the cafe up town and have a Reuben with fries and a chocolate milk. Grease city, to say the least, but it didn't effect me like it would now. LOL!

And then we would head across the street to the other cafe and dump quarters into the Track and Field Arcade came. Fun memories!

              • Okay, let's throw another piece of junk into this junk drawer....

The town of Thief River Falls is getting an A level minor pro hockey team next year. They will be playing the in the Federal Prospect Hockey League. It is going to be owned by the league, but looking at the league map, travel is going to be a killer. Topeka, KS, Hamilton, IN and Port Huron, MI are the closest teams. The Detroit area is supposedly getting a team as well.

Looking at team penalty minutes, looks like it could very well be the Federal League from Slapshot......

My pre game meal for football in high school was the linebacker sub from Kwik Trip. It was an 8 inch hoagie with 4 or 5 types of meats and multiple cheese slices. Washed it down with a Gatorade. I miss my young metabolism.

We have a pizza ranch in Winona now and I cant get myself to eat there. I'm afraid it would ruin me for a couple days.

Worst part is school got out at 3:30 and our game stated at 5. Meaning they had less than an hour to eat, digest, and be out on the court for warm ups.

                    • Godfathers buffet was a go-to lunch for me in HS.
48 minute lunch period. 10 minute driver each way. Gotta throw that stuff down as fast as possible, which is also a good idea when eating pounds of pizza. Haha

I'd be sleepy by that point. That's a lot of food to sort out!

We had one in Marshall - right next to Hardee's. Easily my favorite chain pizza. The one in Watertown, SD is by far the best.

Well that's certainly interesting. Minnesota has a pretty large gap in franchised hockey teams between the NAHL and NHL - but all roads lead to Rochester for potential expansion (sans facilities, obviously), so TRF is a bit of a surprise, regardless of how nice the mini-Ralph is.

Might have to put me down for a jersey though...

                              • Small airport in TRF will help somewhat with the travel time, but probably not with expenses.
