Oh - no, you're good. Apologies if I made you feel called out, that was not my intent. Stanger responded with the answer to your question about the rule change, I was just providing some context as to why the decision has been so frustrating for NSIC fans. I saw you mentioned you were a PSAC fan, so I wasn't sure what context you had - that was all I meant.

Crookston could/should drop to DIII - UMAC. They'd likely be somewhat competitive on a conference level. Instead, we changed the rules to keep them around on their terms, and that rubbed a lot of people the wrong way, rightfully so.

St. Cloud is competitive in a few sports, but the institution has been a dumpster fire for the better part of two decades now. I'm of the opinion that the NSIC should have held their feet to the fire over football, instead they gave them an easy out. I know they just hired a new President and are trying to add a few things here and there, but I'm kind of tired of them - as I think most of us are.

Yes, it was the 2nd largest school in the state behind the U. That changed hands in 2012 to Mankato.

Ironically - UMC's plan to go all-in on baseball after deleting football makes the UMAC an even more attractive option. They could tear the house down with BLC every year instead of waving Augustana and MSU goodbye after the conference tournament. My guess is they have an administrator that believes staying D2 heightens the profile of the school, or something.

As for Cloud - they peaked in 2010 with something like 18,500 students and are down around half when the last numbers were released in October. The MSU people can correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe Kato has hovered around 15,000-16,000 in that time. SCSU holds a slim 100 student lead over UMD, and a 500 student lead over SMSU.

I'm old enough to remember when Morris was the top dog of the NIC. Then the new administration turned them into such an embarrassment that they finally went D3, which was a wise decision. UMC should do the same.

I did play defensive end in HS and averaged a sack a game. Had more of those than catches as a tight end.

I mostly played offense as a receiver, but I played some defense as a Monster Man (aka Rover). It's basically a Strong Safety who moves up to Linebacker depth as a run stopper. Our coach at 29 Palms High (Go Wildcats!) was a Oklahoma Sooners fan and they created the position or so he said. I remember a game up at Big Bear in snow flurries and a swirling wind where I stopped the RB even though he practically ran me over. He hit me so hard that I had a concussion, but I held on and brought him down. Back in those days they didn't use head injury protocols. The Coach would take you for a play and put you right back in the game. I was out cold for maybe five seconds and saw stars. When I got up I was wobbly but happy that I stopped the RB on fourth down. We ran out the clock and won the game, I think it was 7-6. The next season I stuck to offense, it was safer. For me anyway. :)

Yeah - although much of that enrollment is from the "College Now" high school crowd and isn't necessarily on-campus full-time enrollment.

That being said - it's pumped a lot of life into a school that had largely grown stagnant, so... I'm all for it. It's becoming unrecognizable to me (in a good way) and it wasn't all that long ago I was a student there.

Now if we could just overhaul athletics...

Yes, "29 Palms" was a hit song for Robert Plant after Led Zeppelin broke up. He owns a home in 29 Palms. I don't know how often he goes there. I never saw him. Dick Dale had a home there, I saw him at the super market several times. He has since passed on, but he was friendly and loved to talk about his surf guitar sound.

I can't pull up the article now, but there was an article from when Crookston and St Cloud dropped football, either the AD or president was quoted talking about how they align better with D2 instead of D3, or something like that.

I've posted this before, but years ago I talked to the AD at Martin Luther College, who had some really interesting things to say about former UMAC and now defunct NAIA Presentation and also why they didn't want UMC because they lack a travel partner.

That's probably a big part of why Crookston is comfortable in the NSIC. Having Moorhead (75 miles) and Bemidji (90 miles) so close matters. Crookston is 200 miles from Morris, which I believe would be the closest school in the UMAC. These are travel and financial decisions that institutions have to make. Some people don't like to hear this, but college sports is about more than just wins and losses or championships.

If people want Crookston out of their conference, they should be hoping that more programs like Dakota State, Mayville and so on join the NSIC in the coming years, because eventually it would get to a point where the league might split in two.
