Upper Iowa is gone. I may have missed it, did MSU have a vote in 2005/2006 on Mary, before MSU was in the conference?

Fans not liking some of the smaller, non-competitive schools is one thing. But I haven’t seen where school officials have spoken out about them.

I still maintain it’s not about superiority. It’s about what does the applicant add/bring to the table? The answer is solely an even number. That’s not enough, IMO - This is how I feel about MSU going D1. Many conferences in the area would ask, “what do they bring us, how do they make us better?” That is almost as big of a hurdle as money for the transition.

At the D-I level, you have to bring something to the table as there are serious $$$ involved with March Madness, broadcast rights, etc. (some conferences more than others). At the D-II level, it is less about money (outside of the travel budget) and more about are they "like minded" (sorry for using a current buzz word).

Fans of schools can b!tch and moan all they want, but we are not the ones making the decisions. I have seen it at the D-I hockey level, both the good and the bad, of realignment, kicking teams out, accepting teams in. Bemidji was there in 1998 when D-II hockey was cut by the NCAA. They, along with other schools, had to start their own league just to have a place to play. Then the CHA fell apart, and they had to sell their soul to the WCHA to have a place to play, only to see the WCHA blow up two years later. Where would Mankato hockey be if the WCHA thumbed their nose at them in the mid 90s? Where would St. Cloud hockey be if the WCHA thumbed their nose at them in the mid 80s?

Sorry, got off on a tangent there.....

And Morningside was the "Chiefs" (and "Maroon Chiefs") before becoming the now generic "Mustangs"

Agree. Fans can b!tch and moan and cheer, and they should, it means they care. But they/we don’t make the call.

Like-minded is extremely open ended. But I agree, the realistic expectations are very low at D2. As is being proven here, a school simply needs to apply and be ‘within the footprint’

The old school song- "On Morningside, foemen deride, fight for the old Maroon!"

The original design for the Maverick logo was a horse. Except there was another school in Southern MN that beat them to the punch with a horse logo, so they adopted the cow instead.

I think Augie gettting D1 hockey means they are NOT leaving - will be happy in the NSIC now.

I think Mankato and UMD both go to the Summit - once Jamestown and / or Dakota State join. The realiity is Manakto and UMD feel they are better than Jamestown, etc. and so if they leave it might be better overall for the league.

And Crookston is leaving - just a matter of time.
Hitting the nail on the head.

The fact is, the core of the league is "smaller" public universities and privates. I'd argue that Jamestown has more in common with the bulk of the NSIC than Mankato, SCSU and UMD do.

Interesting, I have not seen that anywhere. I'll have to do some digging.

That is true. However sometimes the addition can be as simple as sponsoring a sport. The Summit for example is in desperate need of schools with Baseball to reach AQ status. Which, Augie, SCSU, and Mankato have a pretty healthy program. Things like that do come into play as much as the TV market

Absolutely. But they also already had their swing at Augie. Or vice versa. SCSU? Man, I just can’t see them being D1 across the board. They have to figure out a way to stop bleeding money the way it is first.

I wasn’t even considering TV market. Mankato isn’t tiny, but it’s nothing terribly large either.

SCSU has so many problems, especially in enrollment, that they last thing they need to do is go D1. That place is a dumpster fire, just ask a lot of alumni who are sickened and embarrassed by what has happened there. Terrible leadership.

I know many. None are happy. All (that were) have stopped donating and one resigned a board position within their college. More like a landfill fire…

I read it in a Free Press article - October 2021 if that helps.

I would post a link but it's kinda funky from my phone. Actually a very interesting article, I thought.

                            • It's a shame what happened to SCSU. Beautiful old urban campus, proud history, nice football stadium...

The effects of rogue administrations have been devastating. I remember visiting campus last hockey season and seeing what once was.

Now they are partnering with holistic healing for-profit schools to stay afloat. It's beyond embarrassing.

I feel for the alumni, students, athletes, community - and the institution itself for being lead so wrong.

                              • Word is the selection committee had dinner at Paradiso and enjoyed their below average Mexican food and took it as a sign that Jamestown belongs in the NSIC but then they were offended by the Jimmy mascot after they looked it up on urban dictionary but decided the NSIC Influencers of Change Pledge could fix that problem. To cap off the night they celebrated with pumpkin spice non alcoholic margarita's and exchanged pronouns, job well done.
