We lost our QB pretty early in the season. He was a 3-Star recruit out of California, but committed to our previous coach. I think that happened pretty close to the start of the season if I remember correctly. He seems to be out of football, for whatever that's worth.Originally posted by UMary1 View Post
So frustrating taking a step back, thought you guys had great momentum going into this season. Was there much turnover? I remember when Mary went 4-7 then 2-9, it was really frustrating.
Our current QB, Marucs Martin seems to be talented, but is definitely inexperienced - and I feel was quickly thrust into the spotlight a bit too soon.
I think there were a couple other notable departures as well. We also had Jesse Sherwood graduate last year, and he was a pretty special RB when healthy.
Definitely a step back as far as I'm concerned given our coaching hire. I've really stopped caring about wins and losses this year and have started to care more about seeing improvements.
It seems like we will play well, but then make 2-3 big mistakes that cost us the game.

Actually, I have no idea how NAIA scholarships work, because I have no need or desire to get in the weeds about it.Originally posted by debergfan
The problem with naia is the scholarship that don’t count against the 8. If you have x gpa, it’s called exemption at the naia level. Stanger knows this. Naia has higher amount of scholarships.

You hit most of the highlights, as well as some of the lowlights. Will add, that SMSU drew the toughest or 2nd toughest schedule. Overall, fairly young team-lots of Sophs & Jrs starting. Martin (QB) true Soph—probably played a year before ready—has shown improvement. But to your lowlights or inconsistency-they make 2/3 mistakes a game that they are not equipped to overcome.Originally posted by SW_Mustang View Post
Not much, honestly. I think it will be a close game. We can't seem to get all sides to click. Last week our QB did well with an open field but as soon as we got deep into Mavland and we didn't have room to work with, everything fell apart. TOs and bad snaps have plagued us. Was also not super impressed with the defense either - a handful of big gains that shouldn't have happened.
It could honestly go either way this week.
Now that I think about it, I've been to two SMSU games this year and only saw one TD - and it was a rushing one, from the QB no less.
Proving the point that the difference between winning and losing is very small—think about how you would think about the team/season IF (Big IFs) but -SMSU played better & was the better team with Valpo. Should have won that game. Out played Northern for a half-if SMSU played two halves maybe they get a W, instead of a 24-17 loss—-3-6 now would be a little easier to take than 1-8. Been to 2 games in person-just random thoughts of a football junkie.

SMSU's schedule this season ranks 27th in Division II and second among all NSIC schools through nine weeks. SMSU opponents through nine weeks have a combined record (not including the game versus SMSU) of 40-30, which includes a road game at FCS Valparaiso. SMSU's Division II opponents this season have a combined record of 40-22.

Thanks for posting that story, it's cool to see the progress!Originally posted by UMary1 View Post
The process is in phase II and got 12 million last year. Here is a news report, looking forward to having a stadium on campus.

I'd be a fool to not believe in Scott Underwood's ability to coach a football team. This is a step back for sure, but it's year 2. Martin likely wasn't going to be the starter this year until our QB1 left anyway, so the fact he's found a way to continuously improve is a bright spot for me.Originally posted by FB Player Coach & Fan View Post

I'm not trying to find silverlinings and moral victories in what will likely be a 1 win season, but I don't think anyone thought the beginning of the Scott Underwood era would be anything but rocky. These things take time. If our boys are pushing themselves and improving on a weekly basis, then that's a solid direction to be trending.

Count me in as one who had driven through Bismarck (mostly at night), on trips to Montana and Wyoming. I had NO IDEA how big and interesting the city is or how pretty that campus is overlooking the river valley. It was pretty impressive, I think they could be dangerous, in the future, with the new stadium and continued commitment from the areaOriginally posted by vikingfaithful View Post
Have to say I'm impressed. I've always thought of UM as a sleeping giant, In a large community and with on campus facilities. Look out rest of league.

Agreed! My idea was to add some suites to that side into the side of the hill and to add the new pressbox on that side at the 50 yard line - built into the hill. It would be very cool, but alas I have been dismissed .Originally posted by Matt Witwicki View Post
Well, the SMSU visitors side is kinduva joke....so any improvement would be an upgrade.

The On Campus Bubble and Stadium will be a game changer. Our AD who is a former football player from Ohio University who seems ultra committed to the program. Shann is bringing in some great energetic coaches who are getting players to buy in. Sky's the limit but we all know variables can affect progress, ie, turnover. Here is to hoping we get the win against the Mustangs and compete with Morehead to build momentum for next year. Witt picked SMSU for this week, big locker room material!Originally posted by CollegeFBGuy View Post

While I would love to see Mary improve, I kinda disagree about winning against SMSU haha. I guess I'm kinda biased lol.Originally posted by UMary1 View Post

Your basketball team was in town last night to take on the Jackrabbits. I thought that was kinda cool. I'd have gone but it started really late.
