Should Jamestown be accepted into the NSIC?

I'm wondering whether or not I should venture back to South Dakota on Thursday night for the opener of the NSIC campaign. Love my alma mater but I have a feeling it's not going to be a good year for the Yellowjackets. Sioux Falls should win that game by three scores.

well because the work it takes to become licensed in a new state and start over as a lawyer is very budrensome, especially when you a very successful and thriving practice here. It's not like working in marketing or banking where you can just reloacte easily.

To answer your question, it's more efficient and profitbale to stay here 7-8 more years, bite the bullet, then move once I start getting social security and crawing my retirement accounts -- which Minnesota taxes heavily and most states don't tax at all. that will be a huge difference in disposable income when retied. upwards of 10%.... that's a great trip each year instead of paying it to the State of Minnesota. there is a reason a whole bunch of people from Minnesota live 6 plus months in SD, Florida, or Texas...

I can't speak as much on Watertown - I had an office up there once and would visit. Nicest downtown of the three - seemed like they had a ton of money for a small South Dakota town, more than similar populations of Aberdeen and Brookings, but I don't know much about their business community beyond what I did and who we supported locally. Exquisite Godfather's though.

Fortunately or Unfortunately, life with jobs, family, kids, significant others...all lead to changes. Only doing things because you want to is something we are in the process of teaching our young kids right now, is not how life works.

To each their own, as far as where you'd choose to end up if you could be anywhere, but under different circumstances, I'd have never left in the first place.

Wife is from mn, but it's our hope that the kids end up in South Dakota following high school and we can move there after retirement. But again, what we want or hope for may not be what they want or hope for.

Marshall's business community beats the breaks off of Brookings alone - and you know what I think about Marshall.

MrMustang was not comparing SD to MN, he was simply stating several cities were doing well in SD. You're an excellent poster on this forum, but at times can be hostile for no apparent reason. Not a single S. Dakotan made this a rock fight with the great state of Minnesota. If you to compare use WI. as MN has more in common with that state.

I like Marshall, it's been 37 years ago since I made sales calls there. I would ride with a fast peddling bicycle club in the evening and have a cold one afterwords, good memories. Give me the facts on the business advantage in Marshall over Brookings?

That's fair - I come off harsh sometimes I'm sure. MrMustang takes a lot of shots at his home state. I mean, he was just taking shots at Minnesota for having worse wages than South Dakota - I was just highlighting the very obvious resource gap between the two states. If I've learned anything, it's okay to punch in one direction but not the other on this board.

Based on the numbers I looked at - Schwan's, Runnings, and the nearby Northstar Mutual do about 4X the annual revenue of Daktronics and Larson. To Brookings' credit, they do have a solid manufacturing base with Solventum (formerly 3M), TCF, and Babybel, but those companies are HQ'd elsewhere (ironically, two of which are in Minnesota). I can't speak on the agriculture side of things, maybe Brookings has enough there to tip the scale in their direction? SDSU also does a lot more output than SMSU and also oversees the business park near campus.

It's not state politics - Marshall is a regional hub whereas Brookings is a functional suburb of Sioux Falls. I knew a lot of people that lived in one and worked in the other in both directions. Some people had a better opportunity in Sioux Falls, but wanted a small town life. Some had a better opportunity in Brookings, but preferred the city. Nothing wrong with either. Marshall is the support for much of Southwest Minnesota - split with Worthington.
