I should have majored in something management related, I was just marketing. Work with sports teams though.

4.78 was the average, 5.2 was the peak, 5.6 was a typo - I explained the former two, I'm pretty sure. The third one is understandable given I posted from my phone.Originally posted by Purple Mav Man View Post
Thats the 3rd different number you’ve presented for viewership.
And it is ok, you’re right.
But if no one is watching for NDSU, what good does it do them? How many of the random casual sports fans that made up a majority of the 4.78 or 5.2 or 5.6 million, whichever it is today, who were only watching because of the hype and circus gave two sh!ts that NDSU was the other team. Many probably didn’t even pay attention to who The Colorado Circus was playing. So yes, it gave them exposure. Now show me the numbers of how it benefited NDSU. What was their financial gain from that exposure outside of the guarantee that Colorado paid them?
Different sources round and report differently, but you'll find here that my numbers aren't far off - here is some proof - more than anyone else in the thread has provided.

You and I both have burdens of proof - so let's do this:
-I'll see what I can find to suggest that NDSU getting loads of national exposure benefits their program
-You see what you can find to explain how the FCS championship game provides exposure for their program. (Or however you'd prefer to word your claim - so I'm not putting words in your mouth).
We'll both share our findings - sound good? It's the only logical way to end this silly debate.
Or we can come to a gentleman's agreement to disagree. I'm fine with either. But I think posting our thoughts has long since run it's course on this topic.
EDIT: I am headed out to a hockey game so I'm not going to reply right away.Last edited by SW_Mustang; 10-17-2025, 05:04 PM.

Sports Management with a minor in marketing here. So, same.Originally posted by SW_Mustang View Post

I didn't realize how passionate people are about sports marketing - warms my heart as a sports marketing guy.
I say it every time but I think most of y'all are a swell bunch and I enjoy butting heads. Life would be boring if we just agreed with each other all the time.

It's okay if you don't believe that national TV exposure in front of 5.6 million people doesn't have the same effect as winning an FCS title. It's okay that I believe it has more value. What I'm looking for is to know why winning an FCS title helps NDSU more than playing on TV in front of millions. I picked the second most watched FCS Championship in history and compared it to the FBS game played that same year - and people said it was "anecdotal." I did look for viewership numbers for other games, but they were impossible to find.

Jimmies are up to three conference wins in volleyball with their 3-1 victory over Minot. Mary coming up tomorrow and I expect they'll win that.
Interesting that the Jims are ahead of Augustana in the standings - I didn't see that coming.

I may have misinterpreted what you said/meant. Which seems to happen a lot when the goalposts move.

I didn't lecture anyone. I posted a statement and defended it with the evidence I had. I don't want any of you to agree with me for the sake of agreeing with me.Originally posted by Purple Mav Man View Post
You didn’t question me. You lectured us.
I agree that NDSU (like nearly all schools) loves attention. But your initial point was they were trying to build a brand by winning FBS game and not on their 10 national titles. I haven’t seen many shirts, etc printed with the win over Kansas State. But damn near every Bison fan will tell you about their championships. Ialso doubt anyone outside of NDSU’s fanbase cares that theybeat Kansas State (except for KSU fans of course. Haha)
Of course they want to build a brand. Every business does. Not disagreeing with you on that, just the means.
I think it’s common knowledge that NDSU would prefer to be FBS. So if that is what you mean by “winning FBS games”, then sure.

I never said NDSU should move up - we all know there's a lot more to that happening than a school simply wanting to go. All I said is that given their position, I believe that NDSU gets more exposure by playing P4 teams and showed the best data set available. Sure, some years their viewership for those FBS games isn't as high - I even acknowledged that NDSU was fortunate to play a really hyped Colorado team that swung the viewership in their favor.
Now - here's the shocking bit. I will add here that I was wrong about MSU's financial position. My opinion was based on some conversations I had with internal people, but I gave it some thought and I was likely either misinterpreting what they said, or was only hearing their opinion and not others. A handful of MSU people acted like I called the school flat broke, and some random NSU goofball said I hated the university because I had a neutral opinion. I can explain what I meant until I'm blue in the face and people are just going to take it in whatever direction they want, and that's perfectly okay - but to get upset (not referring to you specifically) when I try to defend a statement is... concerning.

I need to hop off for the night - I enjoy going back and forth with you, so don't take our discussions personally regardless of how animated we both get (I don't think you are - but just so you know where I'm at).
Either NDSU benefits from being in front of a peak 5.2, or they don't. I made the claim that it's beneficial for them regardless of the circumstances - and you said I was picked apart. Now you're saying it was beneficial for them. I genuinely don't understand - is it, or isn't it? Why or why not?
I'm quickly learning that it doesn't make me a lot of fun at parties - but I see college sports through a business lens. Part of it is what I do for a living, part of it is my Marketing degree - but it's how I see the world. I winced a bit when the SMSU logo appeared in an unflattering YouTube video with close to 2 million views a couple weeks ago.
I don't have to speak for NDSU to know they like money. They want more people to know who they are, and to do that - they need to be in front of as many people as they can, as often as they can. I can say that because it's how every school operates... like... for example... Jamestown joining the NSIC. Good night everybody!

I could have 🙂Originally posted by SW_Mustang View Post
Man - you're my favorite poster to go back and forth with. But you could have just said "2" lol
But you also asked me this:
Okay - answer me this. You think it's absolutely incomprehensible that I want DI to have one trophy like literally every other sport in every other facet of society. But then you scoffed at my obviously sarcastic comment to add an additional fourteen trophies to DI football. Where is your line on how many are acceptable and how many aren't, and why?
So I didn’t want to avoid the question. I don’t like avoiding questions. An example was provided on how not literally every other sport in the history of society has one trophy. I also now realize I failed to answer how many aren’t acceptable - I don’t have an answer, 2 seems fine. Thankfully, that’s not my call! Ha.
I also don’t think it’s incomprehensible that you think that. It’s more so that I think (IMO of course) that it’s silly to just dismiss what FCS teams have accomplished simply because you don’t care for that level.Last edited by Purple Mav Man; 10-17-2025, 12:54 PM.

Yeah, you're right. NDSU definitely doesn't care about getting attention any way they can. Silly me for questioning you.
