So much else to do in Mankato on a Friday night.
I think part of Omaha's struggles have to do with sharing the market with Creighton and even the Huskers down the road. Yeah the Gophers will always be competition for eyeballs, but there's a small opening with a little more room to operate.

I do think there's a number of people who would be excited to see some of the classic NCC rivals on the schedule again.

But the top end can be very good. And you can open up potential revenue streams like SDSU playing at Iowa or USD going to play at Kansas State.

I actually think the Summit would be fine with Mankato joining. I think the Augie thing didn't work solely for the fact of the Sioux Falls market share.
And SMSU is near the bottom of the NSIC, seems like a fair comparison. We all know it’s non-scholarship, which is why it’s the likely landing place for an NSIC moving up. USD and SDSU didn’t get those invites from the Pioneer league…they are in one of the top FCS conferences. Also, SDSU was coming off a championship game appearance. But the potential is possibly there at some point.

The NCC has been gone for close to 15 years. It's a non-factor. Maybe some of the older fans care, but the vast majority of people have moved on. I say this as someone who interacts with SDSU fans daily - I hear it mentioned as a footnote and nothing more.

That being said, the Summit is bad. Absolute non-player in all sports except the odd year Oral Roberts is good in baseball. There's a reason SDSU refuses to schedule the NSIC in any meaningful competition - in favor of the local NAIA schools.

Sure it'll never be the SEC, but it's not bad for what it is.

I am no gopher fan, but I do think it would be cool if they built a new version of it. But, you know, with amenities and restrooms :)

I've wondered if they could essentially tear down both Williams and Mariucci, and build a larger building between the two footprints that houses both basketball and hockey.

They won't tear Mariucci down, they just sunk a bunch of money into it to shrink the rink from Olympic to closer to NHL. They also just recently did a major overhaul of the players' area.

Mary & UIU entered in 2006- the four NCC schools in 2008- Minot & USF in 2012.

Right, I'm talking about within 2006, the order of how the expansion happened.

Not sure which came first, the Pirate or the Egg Layer. I had to look up when the NIC (men's) merged with the NSIC (women's)- 1992. I remember driving to Southwest on Wednesday nights for NIC games since the NCC was Friday-Saturday.

Paywalled article, but here's a relevant quote from it:

Upper Iowa, in Fayette, Iowa, moved from NCAA Division III to Division II in 2003. The university fell one vote shy of being invited to join the NSIC last year.
Sounds like Upper Iowa was considered first, and would've joined in 2005, but when that failed, Mary was considered along with the Peacocks the following year, maybe to appease the western schools.

Good find. I had seen that UIU was a D2 independent for a couple years, so I figured that to be the case.

If being judged solely on the fact that it's a D1 conference...

                              It's... something I guess.

It's also a reasonable opinion that if Upper Iowa wasn't on the verge of going broke they don't leave the NSIC as they have big cuts coming
Good points. It's wild that the North Star barely lasted a decade.

Someone mentioned re-forming the DAC, and while I agree everyone wouldn't join (BHSU and Mines laugh at the idea), I wonder if an shrunken version would have a chance in this crazy ever-changing NCAA world. I think Mary and Minot would consider it, probably Jamestown too if it had happened before the jump, easy choice for Crookston, and the other schools in limbo from the old North Star (Both DSUs, Mayville, Valley City) could have a home if they wanted to pursue Division II. There's 8.
