  • NSU Wolves 2025

Guess it’s about time to start this thread.

Incoming freshman moved into the dorms today. Fall camp is about to start.

Sounds as though we have a QB battle going on at Northern this fall.

That is interesting. I have heard some people are pretty high on the new transfer QB. NSU will definitely need to be able to throw the ball better than last season if they are going to have the success many are hoping for. I'm excited to see what the new OC brings to the table as well.

I can't wait for the season to start. I would describe my outlook on the season as cautious optimism. NSU has never really been able to break into the upper echelon of the NSIC, but hopefully we can continue building toward that goal. There have been some lofty predictions thrown about, but I think generally an 8-3 season is the accepted ceiling for the Wolves this year. In order to accomplish that we would need to avoid the bad loss that seems to happen every year, and steal one that we are not expected to win.

Must wins: vs Concordia, at Mary, vs SMSU, vs Minot, at Jamestown

50/50 that we need to win both at home: vs Wayne, vs Moorhead

Need to steal one: at USF, at Bemidji, vs Duluth, at Augie

I think the battle for QB1 has not been finalized but it appears you have an athlete in Britt vs a transfer QB that can read defenses and make better decisions in the passing game. I could see a world where they both play early and see if one seperates himself from the other.

            Any word on morale?

              Haven’t heard anything regarding that.

What I will say is I am pretty sure Schmidt learned a hard lesson early on with all the transfer and not creating a good culture. It’s was soooooo much better last year.

On the local radio show he mentioned something like for the first time most guys are living off campus meaning the young guys are sticking around more than two years since Northern requires them to live on campus their first two years.

Heard the same thing 3 or 4 weeks ago. Coaches really like the Missouri State transfer.

Good article in the Aberdeen Insider about the upcoming season (still 9 days away for us!). Britt is mentioned as the starter at QB.

Northern State University will look to build on last year's finish to an inconsistent season when it kicks off its 2025 college football campaign Saturday,

Northern tied for 3rd in league play, are the Wolves the team nobody is talking about, but should?

I think Schmidt likes that he can run but my understanding is the transfer is the far better QB.

I expect to see them both play unless and until one pulls away from the other

A few interesting items in the 2 deep for this weekends game. I'm a little surprised Kaiser is listed as a backup at WR, but he will no doubt get a lot of snaps. I know they have been impressed with a couple of the transfers that have come in so I'm not shocked to see Birdsong and Boykins as starting WRs. The most interesting item is the big bold OR at the QB position. Britt was named as a team captain, but if I remember correctly we had a QB that ended up as a backup as a captain a couple of years ago. I think the tricky part for NSU is that these 2 QBs play very different styles. That can cause problems for opposing defenses, but can also cause problems for your own offense as well.

I think there's a chance that you see plenty of QB runs from Britt when he's in..while Brock Bagozzi (xfer) is a taller / slinger of the football with good arm strength = more of an air attack kinda like they tried to do just after COVID. We will have to see if they have the dudes to run that..but I find Birdsong (5'9'), the athletic slot who runs nice routes..I see him as the kinda guy who could be a reliable high volume guy..kinda like Sklyhous for USF the last few years. Boykins appears to be a speedster who they might wanna get downfield. They will need to be better in the passing game then when I saw them in their Spring game vs Kato, which was pretty one-sided, but I think there's some new blood on the offensive side that could help change their offensive identity.

My guess is Britt is not long for this world as the Northern starting QB. In my opinion he cost us the chance to win the Minot game last year and almost cost us the win against against Bemidji by making terrible decisions. He can move well but is sorely lacking in the passing game.

Bagozi is more of a true QB and as long as he can move well enough to keep the defense honest, I think he’s the guy.

Having a new OC with a different system might make that change an easier pill to swallow in the locker room. Britt did help lead the turn around last season that kept a lot of people in Aberdeen and he was selected as a captain so you'd have to believe he has the respect of his teammates. Given the expectations, I would expect there will be a short leash (if the decision hasn't already been made). Even if a change is made, I would expect Britt to still have some packages to run the ball. But the offense was very one dimensional last season and will need to be better this year.
