To be honest there was quite a bit of optimism coming into this season. We knew it may take an upset or two, but 8-3 was a realistic expectation and 9-2 was not completely out of the question. The expectations have been lifted in Aberdeen. Being in the playoff conversation is the expectation. Perhaps not every season, but it is no longer considered a pipe dream.Originally posted by tman28 View PostEvery game a playoff game for Northern and Moorhead... was that something Wolves fans expected at the beginning of the season? 1 game at a time might fet you to the big time!

I'm assuming that is due to their throw it all over the field passing attack, compared to a team that does a mix of running and passing? Or is the concern that the team won't be "up" for Moorhead like they will be for Augie?Originally posted by Waldo View PostIs it weird that I am more nervous for the Moorehead game than I am the Augie game?
It should be fun to follow down the stretch

Probably a little bit of that but more the fact the Moorehead game is right before Augie and if they do beat Moorehead that Augie game is going to be huge. A playoff chance on the line and the first time beating Augie in more than 20 years. Augie is easily the better team but it just seems like the past few years we play the really good teams really well and kind of play down to the competition of the lower teams. There is no reason that NSU should have been able to run for 250+ yards on Duluth and only 138 yards against BSU. It just makes no sense.

I think NSU has already had the patented “stub your toe” game for the season in Bemidji. This team is just different at home and we have played well against Morehead the last few seasons. It will be a good game for sure, but I like our chances. The DBs will need to tackle well and hopefully we can get some sort of a pass rush or it could be a problem though.
Augie is a whole other problem. It is on the road and we have not played well against the Vikings. One game at a time for the players, but this is one NSU fans have circled every time we play them.

Huge game this weekend. I hope the MASH unit we have left on defense can get some pressure on Strand. We are getting deep into the DB depth chart and our best pass rusher may also be out long term? The offense is going to have to control the ball and score a bunch of points. This should be a very entertaining game with the Dragons.

If NSU can run the ball like they have been the past two weeks I think we will be in good shape. Moorehead is third to last in the league in yards given up on the ground while NSU is second in rushing yards a game only behind Minot who runs every play. Defense is hanging on by a thread with all the injuries.

Are those stats on the NSIC page or where do I find them? ***Edit-I went looking and found them. Interesting to look at them, this deep into the season***

The NSU vs. Moorhead football "rivalry" (or lack thereof) is a bit strange to me. NSU has historically played more games against the Dragons than any other opponent, yet I don't think either school would consider this a real rivalry on the football field. We play almost every season, and it is a relatively even series, yet this is never one of the bigger games for either school. I suppose this is largely owed to both programs being mostly mediocre historically and having other in-state or "trophy" games that alumni feel are more important. There has been a real rivalry in basketball the last 2 decades as both teams have been pretty good. Given the stakes and the level of the teams, this year might be the biggest football game in the history of this series.

Some observations after another great NSU victory.
1) The OL has been absolutely amazing this year. Whether opening holes for the backs or giving the QBs time, they have been great.
2) Wyatt Block is exactly what fans of college sports love. He is a guy that has put in his time and stuck with a program for 4 years. He has developed into an absolute stud.
3) It is amazing what the coaches and QBs have accomplished this season. They say the right things, but I’m sure it’s been a delicate balance to have both guys play and play well.
4) While we don’t have a stud WR like years past, we have some great depth and guys that have made some huge plays. Birdsong has been really good and DJ Smith has made some of the best catches I’ve ever seen.
5) I can’t ever remember seeing so many injuries to one side of the ball. The number of defensive players out is truly staggering.

It's no secret that Northern's defense is being held together literally by a single piece of duct tape at this point with all the injuries....... However, I think the stat that sums this game up is that Minot was 7 for 7 on fourth down. So many chances to get off the field. Northern had the ball for only 11 minutes and out gained Minot by over 100 yards.

I just don’t think injuries were an excuse to get beat like that
especially by a team that was 2-7. A lot of teams are decimated by injuries. Mankato is one of them and they just took Augie to the woodshed.
That was poor coaching in my opinion. Schmidt has got to get some help on defense. He’s the head coach, special teams coach and DC. It’s too much.
