I can't rail too hard on it, SMSU got public funding for the REC - but I'm typically an academics first kinda guy.

Chartwells 10 year contract with SCSU is up. going back to Sodexo. Chartwell is closing at SMSU also

SMSU's is bad. I wish we had the money to build the visitor's stands we had planned, but alas. Just be nice if we could accommodate visitors a little better - especially when they're driving from far away places.

That is true, I like the berm that we have - I'm sure it's nice for families and I notice some people prefer lawn chairs. The end zone is fun especially when a team is near the goal line on that side.

"Upgrades to the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center (HBNHC) are underway and are planned to be completed by the fall.

The $12.9M construction project will reduce the ice sizes for both hockey rinks, replace a failing ice rink cooling plant and make behind-the-scenes updates that will have long term benefits for the facility.

These upgrades were possible due to Higher Education Asset Preservation and Replacement (HEAPR) funds appropriated by the state legislature. HEAPR money is awarded for maintenance and preservation of existing facilities at the seven universities and 26 colleges in Minnesota State."

Yes, it's called the Future State campaign. It's not just a new stadium but development of the south side of campus. The first phase is the stadium and renovation of the track to form a complex. That part is half the cost of the whole project.

I read that replacing Armstrong Hall got shot down by the legislature. Unfortunate. I sure had a lot of classes in that building.

Yup. Good to know the state has it's priorities in order.

Armstrong reminds me of an old school mental hospital or something. They emailed me a year ago to tell me the interior walls were sagging.

Anyway - I never realized how big that area is south of Stadium until I walked back there to see the observatory. That's going to be nice to have that all done.

Not a good look after sending millions of dollars to St Cloud for the hockey arena. I realize it's much less than the cost of replacing Armstrong, but one is an academic need and the other is not.

the state funding is only 1.2 Million so there will need to be a large amount fundraised too.

Here's the local reporting on it:

SMSU will receive $1.2 million for facilities projects. The 2026 capital investment breakdown listed the bonding dollars as being for projects on the university’s locker rooms and gymnasium, and an athletics dome structure.
At this point, Polfliet said, the university is waiting to learn more specifics about what the bonding dollars can be used for. SMSU’s original bonding request was for about $24.3 million, he said.
Polfliet said updates to the locker room areas have been a high priority for the university for some time.
“The locker rooms really need quite a bit of work,” he said.
