  • 2018 RMAC Attendance

I thought it would be interesting to keep track of attendance throughout the season in a single thread.

I will update this thread weekly. The purpose of this thread is purely for informational reasons.

Attendance figures for any game involving an RMAC team can be found here:

    http://rmacsports.org/calendar.aspx?...ll&season=2018

    2. Chadron State (vs Black Hills St) 3,933
    3. Colorado Mesa (vs SD Mines) 3,550
    4. Fort Lewis (vs NM Highlands) 2,475
    5. Colorado Mines (vs Adams State) 2,033

It will be interesting seeing what Chadron's average ends up being. I wouldn't be surprised that will be the most for the year since it was first game, new facility, night game, and there were quite a few green shirts there! If they can get 3,000 a game I think they would be pretty good. BHSU fans are good at showing up for two games.. SD Mines and CSC haha.

The only time in history Chadron averaged crowds like that was during the Woodhead days. During those days, they had close to 5,000 people with well over a 1,000 crammed around the sides standing during his playoff games, and over 4,000 during regular season games.

A lot depends on how good of a season Chadron has. If they win 8 games or more, they will probably average over 2,500. If they start to struggle, attendance can be pretty thin. They have probably averaged 1,500 fans over the last few years, and there have been a couple games with less than a 1000.

Impressive attendance for Dixie, especially after their week 1 performance.

                    Re: 2018 RMAC Attendance

Thought I'd add a little to this thread. Here are the populations for each schools hometown in order of current standings in attendance.

                    Pueblo CO - 110,291 (2016)
                    Grand Junction CO - 61,881 (2016)
                    St. George UT - 82,318 (2016)
                    Golden CO - 20,696 (2016)
                    Rapid City SD - 74,048 (2016)
                    Chadron NE - 5,725 (2016)
                    Alamosa CO - 9,918 (2016)
                    Durango CO 18,503 (2016)
                    Spearish SD - 11,531 (2016)
                    Gunnison CO - 6,261 (2016)
                    Las Vegas NM - 13,285 (2016)

I pulled this off Google. Makes sense that the 5 most populated towns are having the highest attendance. Chadron is still pulling its weight well (with some help from a big turnout week 1) BHSU is hurting without having either the Chadron or SD Tech game at home. People in Durango must be out on nature walks.

My 2 cents (probably about with it's worth) on the cities/stadiums:

Pueblo - Despite leading RMAC I am always disappointed in our crowds. Too many empty seats especially at playoff games. And the crowds suck. Cisco and I got yelled at by security at a playoff game because some old dude didn't like us being loud.
Grand Junction - I've only been over there to one game, but big and rowdy crowd. I still hate them.
St George - I think it's too soon into their D2 run to judge them. A lot of potential there. Being 2 hours away from the real Las Vegas is a huge plus as a visiting fan.
Golden - Been up there 4 times. Loud and involved crowd, Students and Alumni buy in. All the games I've been to were of great importance (3 CSU-P games and playoff vs Ohio Dominican) so maybe not typical crowds. Also on the edges of Metro area.
Rapid City - Only been once but crowd seemed decent for RMAC. Neat set up with the far side of the field having the 3 tiered hill full of tailgaters
Chadron - Their crowd size and enthusiasm is immensely outsized for that god forsaken panhandle wasteland. (Seriously, how do you get an 18yo kid to agree to spend his college years in Chadron, NE?)
Alamosa - They have had a terrible on field product for so long. The Residences at Rex dorms with the balconies overlooking the field are cool as hell though.
Durango - This stadium is crap, which is too bad because it has absolutely the most beautiful setting in a conference full of beautiful settings.
Spearfish - This is my favorite away trip. I love the whole Black Hills area. Modernize the stadium and try not to suck outloud on the field and this could be so much better.
Gunnison - My big complaint here is that it's hike to get up to the stadium. And the locker rooms are a so far away, CSU-P has halftime in the buses.
Las Vegas(that other one) - Pros: Easy drive from Pueblo and Charlie's Spic & Span bakery and Cafe is awesome. Cons: Everything else. Have they even reopened Perkins(what a dump)? Last year we went to West Las Vegas High. NMHU had halftime under the
cottonwood trees like bantam league. Not good when the high school won't let you in the building.

I do know that Chadron benefits from a long tradition of success and people who truly care about football. Those damn Cornhusker fans love football and I think that trickles down, even to d2 football. For someone who buys into that type program it would be a great fit. BHSU used to have that same edge to it in the NAIA. Now we are too sophisticated to be so blue collar. Probably why we got our butts whooped by CSC...

I agree on the Spearfish comment. Campus is as beautiful as any in the conference. Huge big screen gives it a big school feel but the press box is dated and needs revamped. Awesome tailgating and alumni center area on the east side but visitors likely haven't been there. The weird luxury box on the side looks odd to me. Need to revamp the pressbox with some big school feel. Due to our sophistication I would think it will happen someday... I heard a rumor about a new field and stadium location in the future. Doubt it.

Of all the places I've been CO Mines is my favorite. Their upgrade really made that nice. Rapid City's press box is worse than BHSU. I've heard BH coaches complain about how terrible they are. Honking horns and tailgaters is a cool atmosphere like you said though.

Yes Perkins has re-opened and is now called Sanchez Family Stadium.

Chadron is all blue collar and kids who go there buy into that mentality. They are close-knit and play with a chip on their shoulder. I loved my time there and my oldest is a red shirt freshman there who had some RMAC offers but liked Chadron and the family feel.
