  • Favorite places to eat in RMAC cities

As most of ya know, I try to find the mom and pop places to eat and stay away from chain restaurants. Friendly home town places are great and the people are fantastic. I try and stay away from tourist places like downtown Durango. But the Mexican Family restaurant on the north side of town was great. Also the Texas BBQ on the north side of hwy 160 was not too bad.

Always visit Guadalajara Mexican Restaurant in Spearfish. Woody's in Golden. Beau Jo's anywhere you can find one. The one in Rapid City closed. Bird Dog BBQ in Springs and also Rudy's (technically a chain but the only one in Colorado). Also Que Pasa Cantina and Firehouse Brewery in Rapid. Usually in Grand Junction I'm hitting a fast food place, but the Ale House has never treated me wrong. Jimmy'z is a unique little burger joint in GJ. Really liked Steamworks Brewing in Durango. Raider Ridge in Durango for breakfast burritos. Can't remember my place in Alamosa... it's been a while. Pueblo I'm usually hitting a chain since there are so many near campus. Palisades in Gunnison is basically the only place I ever go.

Almost forgot Serious Texas BBQ in Durango, I think that's the one Pack referred to. The Texas Taco and cherry chipotle salsa are unique (to me, at least)

Sommerset is 36 miles east down I-90 from Spearfish. There you will find JRs Rhodehouse BBQ Pit. It's worth the trip.

I never miss Charlie's Restaurant and Bakery when we go to Las Vegas Highlands. Great huevos rancheros and a pack of fat juicy
              homemade tortillas to snack on.
              Sprinkles are for winners!

Someone mentioned Beau Jos Pizza on an earlier post. If you travel to Golden/School of Mines, there's a Beau Jos about 30 minutes away in Idaho Springs. The original, I believe. On the main drag and easy to find. Old building with tons of Old West character. Used to drive from Denver just for the atmosphere and ambience. Definitely worth the drive for a Mountain Pie.

Some of the places my traveling buddy and I have hit include:

Charlie's in Las Vegas, NM. My favorite
I can't remember the name of the casino, but there is a buffet in Deadwood with amazing prime rib and snow crab. Great stop when in SD for BHSU or SD Mines
                  Mario's Pizza in Gunnison
                  Calvillo's Mexican in Alamosa
                  Runza any trip to Nebraska
Fat Boy BBQ in Canyon, TX. (If we ever play down there again we'll have to hit Coyote Bluff Grill in Amarillo. I have heard multiple rave reviews.)

There was a decent Mexican place in Chadron years back that we used to stop at, no idea what the name was. It was sadly no longer in business the last time I was out there.

I always had the buffet. I am guessing that too is a victim of Covid-19

Ah, but is your wife going to cook me a cabbage burger when I go to Chadron?
