I still don’t think they take a long time on this hire tho. They don’t seem like the type to drag this out for a long time.

Personally I'd love to see them elevate Tripp Thomas, their current DC. He's a younger guy but has headed up some great defenses, understands how to recruit at Mines, and all his players would run through a wall for him as far as I can tell. I don't think Coach Boone is a bad option either though!

You aren't lying. I've heard him coaching his crew on the sidelines and Coach Thomas has a way of getting the best out of his guys. That would also be a sharp hire.

As others have said, the vast majority of players throughout the D2 landscape, but especially at Mines do not have football as plan A. Maybe only a dozen players per year make the NFL from D2. A few more get a training camp or rookie mini camp invite. Some of the greats play CFL. Players committed to Mines are smart enough to know that. They come here to play football at a high level but the degree and the relationships forged at Mines are where the money is. I don't think we lose many (any?) to the coaching change.

Is there a chance that former head coach Gregg Brandon’s son Tim (who is the OC) could get the job?

The timing of this doesn’t seem good..with NLI only 2 weeks away. Feels like a quick turnaround internal hire.

The Mines isn't necessarily in a pickle due to the HC loss. A sizeable number of future Nerds from Texas, Arizona, Colorado and parts unknown have committed to playing in Golden. The prospects who have committed so far look similar to those who have played in Golden in the past and are currently on the roster. Tough, smart, fast kids at the skill positions and hard nose dudes on the defensive side of the ball. Nerd nation in a relatively good place. Plus, it makes no sense for high IQ ballers to look elsewhere when they can get a degree from one of the best engineering schools in the country.

The cheapest 3-bedroom house in Golden, Colorado, is listed at nearly $600,000, requiring a down payment of about $120,000. Housing costs in Colorado are extraordinarily high.

Colorado is entirely too expensive! I can attest to that haha

It’s a bummer to see him go. Mines is a victim of their own success in that regard. I think the interesting question now is whether Yon Boone is the guy. Mines Alum Craig Schurig just became available from Washburn and he’s put together a solid track record in a ridiculously competitive conference. Multiple playoff runs, including a recent one, and a strong winning percentage. If Boone is the guy, it’s hard not to hire from within but it wouldn’t be terrible to bring an alum home.

what are the thoughts of folks at Mines? The next HC will be the 4th since Covid. Obviously the higher performing the program, the greater the risk for this.

Coach was always good to us at D2. Hoping him the best.
