The big winner during the conference tournaments was probably Emporia State. The Hornet's championship game run earned them an at-large bid after not being ranked in the region in any of the 3 polls. 3 of their 4 wins were against regionally ranked opponents and both losses were to #2 seed CentralMO.

The big loser has to be Mankato. The Maverick's "2 & through" NSIC tournament dropped them out of the top 8 from #7 in last week's rankings.

I would agree. I don't recall MSU losing the two opening games in a conference tournament until this year; if it happened it's been a while. Also disappointing was their losing 3 of 4 in the last regular season conference games with Upper Iowa. A team that did not make the conference tournament.

        Re: Central Regional

Minot and NWMSU are both regular season champions (or co-champions) that didn't make the regional. That just goes to show how important non-conference games can be. ESU was 9-4 in regular season non-con games and won nine straight non-cons after dropping four in Grand Prairie to open the year.
I'm not sure the Hornets have any pitching arms left. If Holman throws this week it might have to be as a lefthander.

Emporia caught a huge break (pitching wise) when they jumped on Northwest early. That allowed Fornelli to pull Holman after 3 innings so he had the best pitcher in the MIAA ready when facing elimination on Saturday morning. What an innings eater that guy is.

Emporia's pitching came up huge in the two games against Pitt State, shutting down one of the league's top offenses.

I did find it pretty funny that Northwest was eliminated in two games by a combined score of 19-2 right after publishing a story about how they'd climbed to the top of the MIAA and that they days of UCM and Emporia running the league were over ... only to see the Mules and Hornets play in the championship game.

The Mules did finish 3rd (1 game back of the co-champs) but in the tournament no-hit CentralOK (15-0) and were 3-0 vs the teams that eliminated Northwest.

ESU had a 8-0 lead into the 9th inning before what should have been easy mop-up pitching let Southern Arkansas start tagging the ball and score 6 runs. UCM won easily. So, it was basically business as usual for UCM & ESU as both win and advance into the winners bracket.

Pitt State and UCO should both rebound with wins today. Although, I wonder if UCO is still in a mental funk after being eliminated by UCM in the MIAA tourney, 15-0 no-hitter gem by UCM. I still think UCO will win today and eliminate Oklahoma Baptist.

                        Re: Central Regional

Augie (must win 1 game) vs Southern Ark (must win 2) for the championship today. History says go with Augie. Since the NCAA configured the Central region to include the GAC, MIAA & NSIC in 2013, no team has lost a game and come back through the loser's bracket to win the tournament. All of the previous champs - Mankato (2013 & 2014), Henderson (2015), CentralMO (2016) & Lindenwood (2017) - were undefeated.

                        More useless info:

When Augie clinched a birth in the championship on Saturday night, history also told us their opponent would not be from the MIAA. No conference has made up half of the field for the regional and had 1 team make the championship (it's been either 0 or 2). The make-up of the regional for the previously mentioned period was:

2013: half the field (3 of 6) were from the MIAA - final was Mankato (NSIC) / St Cloud (NSIC)
2014: half the field (3 of 6) were from the GAC - final was Mankato (NSIC) / Emporia (MIAA)
2015: 2 teams from each conference - final was Henderson (GAC) / St Cloud (NSIC)
2016: 3 teams from the MIAA & NSIC, 2 teams from the GAC - final was CentralMO (MIAA) / Monticello (GAC)
2017: half the field (4 of 8) were from the MIAA - final was Lindenwood (MIAA) / CentralOK (MIAA)
2018: half the field (4 of 8) are from the MIAA - final is Augie (NSIC) vs Southern Ark (GAC)

2013 was historically low for the MIAA. CentralMO, Southern & Western made the regional and they had a combined record of 1-6. The one win was CentralMO / Southern.

Good regional so far, only 3 games were won by more than 5 runs and only 1 by double digits. Each conference had a team in the first 4 eliminated (the MIAA had 2) and each had a team in the final 4 (the MIAA had 2).

Southern Ark scored 3 runs in the 8th against an Augie releaver that had not allowed a run all season to come from behind to win 5-3 and force the "if" game.
