  • 2021 MIAA Baseball

We're in the middle of the 4th weekend of MIAA play so I'll recap the first 3 weeks and post the standings with the week 3 recap.

    Week 1
    Sweep for Southern(Emporia)
    2-1 series wins for CentralMO(Rogers), Pitt(Hays), Washburn(Western) & Northeastern(Northwest)
Covid was the winner of the CentralOK/Newman series.

The left Southern alone at the top 1 game ahead of the 2-1 series winners, 1-1/2 games ahead of the covid losers, 2 games ahead of the 2-1 series losers and 3 games ahead of Emporia.

      Week 3
      Sweeps for CentralMO(Hays) & Northwest(Rogers).
      2-1 series wins for CentralOK(Emporia), Southern(Western), Northeastern(Newman) & Washburn(Pitt).

I use the "games back" method for my standings which basically compares how all team stand in relation to .500. The MIAA uses winning % so I post that also. I don't like winning % because that can (but usually doesn't) reward teams with winning records for not playing games. On the flip side it can reward teams with losing records for playing games.

The opp% is conference games only. I'm way to lazy to figure things for all of the non-conference opponents. It will also not include non-conference games between conference opponents.

      Code:
      POS SCHOOL W-L % GB OPP% OVERALL
       1 CentralMO 8-1 88.9 0.0 (40.0) 12-4
       2 Southern 7-2 77.8 1.0 (44.4) 13-2
       3 Northeastern 6-3 66.7 2.0 (46.7) 8-3
       4 CentralOK 4-2 66.7 2.5 (25.0) 7-4
       5 Northwest 5-4 55.6 3.0 (50.0) 6-6
          Washburn 5-4 55.6 3.0 (50.0) 5-8
       7 Pitt 4-5 44.4 4.0 (44.4) 7-5
          Rogers 4-5 44.4 4.0 (55.6) 7-6
       9 Emporia 3-6 33.3 5.0 (66.7) 6-8
      10 Newman 1-5 16.7 5.5 (75.0) 2-6
      11 Western 2-7 22.2 6.0 (50.0) 3-11
          Hays 2-7 22.2 6.0 (60.0) 2-11

If no games are cancelled, everyone will finish at 50%.

        Week 4
        Sweeps for CentralMO(Emporia), Rogers(Hays) & Pitt(Northwest).
        2-1 series wins for Southern(CentralOK), Western(Newman) & Northeastern(Washburn).

CentralMO pulled off their 3rd consecutive sweep but it should be noted the 3 teams swept are the bottom 3 in the league. It's no surprise that Hays & Newman are at the bottom as they were 11th & 12th in the pre-season poll. Emporia, however, is a surprise as they were picked 5th. My guess is that Emporia's position is schedule driven as 3 of their first 4 opponents were picked 1-2-3 in the poll.

I was surprised that Emporia wasn't really competitive. The Hornets never lead in games 1 & 3 and CentralMO won both by spread. Emporia did have the lead in game 2 but never more than a 1 run lead (1-0 after innings 1 & 2 and 3-2 after 5). The Mules tied the game in the 6th, took the lead for good with 3 in the 7th and won 7-4.

After watching game 3 of the series on Sunday I switched to game 3 of the CentralOK/Southern series. Southern had swept the DH on Saturday only trailing 1-0 when CentralOK scored a run in the top of the 1st. The Lions tied the game in the 2nd and never trailed again in the DH. CentralOK had a 6-3 lead going into the bottom of the 8th in game 3. The Lions scored 1 in the 8th and 2 in the 9th to force extra innings. The Lions bullpen melted down in the 10th allowing 5 runs on 4 singles, 2 hit batsmen and 2 walks. The Bronchos won 11-6.

Through 4 weeks CentralMO, Southern & Northeastern have not lost a series. Those 3 plus CentralOK, Pitt & Washburn have not been swept. Hays & Newman are the only teams that haven't won a series.

Week 5 is in the books.

          Sweeps for CentralMO(Washburn) & Southern(Hays).
          2-1 series wins for Pitt(CentralOK), Rogers(Emporia), Northeastern(Western) & Northwest(Newman).

Washburn was swept for the first time this season. The Bods out hit the Mules 15-7 in the first game on Saturday but lost 12-10. The nightcap was a low scoring game. The Bods scored 2 runs in the top of the 8th to take a 2-1 lead. With 2 outs in the bottom of the inning, back-to-back homers by Erik Webb & Dusty Stroup scored the deciding runs in a 3-2 win.

The Mules won 5-2 on Sunday. Erik Webb homered on the first pitch he saw in the bottom of the first, the 53rd home run of his career. He passed Steve Williams, played for SEMO in the early 80's, for the most career homers in MIAA history.

Mule closer Ethan Rathburn was the winning pitcher in the second game and recorded saves in the first & third games.

Washburn (6-9) has won 2 series and lost 3. The 3 lost are to the top 3 teams in the league.

Southern never trailed in sweeping Hays in the DH on Friday. The Lions won the first game 12-2 in 7 innings and the nightcap 16-6. Southern scored 3 runs in the top of the 7th on Saturday to take an 18-17 lead that would wind up the final score. This is the 3rd consecutive week Hays has been swept.

The top two teams meet this weekend in Joplin.

Game 1 of the series between the top 2 teams in the MIAA matched up 2 pitchers with 6-0 records. Zach Parish of Southern, you could say, won the pitcher's dual but lost the game. Mason Green of CentralMO pitched 6 innings allowing 5 hits, 2 runs (both in the first inning), walked 5 and struck out 4. Green pitched well after the first inning never allowing a runner past 2nd base. He walked the only batter he faced in the 7th and that runner reached 3rd on a couple of outs but was stranded there.

Parish pitched 8 innings allowing 3 hits, 3 runs, walked 3 and struck out 13. He allowed 1 hit in the 1st, 3rd & 8th innings. The hits in the 1st & 3rd were home runs by Erik Webb & Scott Walverton. His 3rd walk, the only batter he faced in the 9th, scored the run that put the Lions behind for good so Parish was the losing pitcher in the 5-2 game. The Mules scored 3 runs in the 9th on 2 walks followed by 2 singles sandwiched around a squeeze bunt.

Chase Plymell pitched a 1-2-3 8th striking out 2 earning the win. Evan Rathburn pitched a 1-2-3 9th for his 6th save of the season.

The win puts the Mules 3 games up on Southern. DH tomorrow starting @ 1. All of the games are being video streamed for free on MIAA-TV.

              Week 6 is finished.

              Sweeps for CentralMO(Southern), Northeastern(Hays) & Pitt(Rogers).
              2-1 series wins for CentralOK(Washburn), Emporia(Newman) & Northwest(Western)

This is the 5th consecutive sweep for CentralMO (16 game winning streak) and Hays was swept for the 4th consecutive week (12 game losing streak). The sweep for Northeastern was their first of the season as they had won 2/3 in each of the first 5 weeks.

CentralMO and Northeastern are the only teams to have not lost a series. Those two plus CentralOK & Pitt are the only teams to have not been swept. Both series involving teams with winning records through 5 weeks resulted in sweeps as CentralMO/Southern were 1-2 last week and Pitt/Rogers were tied for 4th.

CentralMO/Southern's Saturday DH was quite different from the low scoring 5-2 game on Friday. The two teams combined for 61 runs as Mules won 17-12 (tied an MIAA record with 9 HR's) & 22-10 (6 Mule pitchers combined to strikeout 16 Lion batters).

Hitting stars for both teams Southern's Tommy Stevenson had 5 hits in first game and Jordan Fitzpatrick had 4. Fitzpatrick added 2 more hits and 5 rbi in the second game.

The Mule's Erik Webb had 5 hits extending his hitting streak to 21 games. Micah Evans also had 5 hits including 3 HR's. He had 6 rbi and scored 8 runs. The top hitter for the day (my guess is a top candidate for hitter of the week) was Dusty Stroup. Stroup had 4 hits in each game including 3 HR's in each. He also drove in 11 runs on the day.

CentralMO @ Pitt is the only series involving teams with winning MIAA records next week. Northwest @ CentralOK & Rogers @ Northeastern both have a team with a winning record against a .500 team.

I fully expect Pitt to get swept by UCM this weekend, but hoping for one win.
Either way, it's nice to see the Gorillas seemingly moving in the right direction under Fornelli after a strong start last season before Covid.

Mules record their 6th straight series sweep and extend their winning streak to 19. They are just beating the cover off of the ball.

Good opportunity the next two Saturdays to catch both football and baseball. Football at noon and then over to the diamond to watch baseball (1:00 & 4:00)

Week 7 - lots of sweeps

                      Sweeps for CentralMO(Pitt), Hays(Western), Southern(Newman) & Northeastern(Rogers).
                      2-1 series wins for CentralOK(Northwest) & Washburn(Emporia)

That is CentralMO's 6th consecutive sweep (19 consecutive MIAA wins). This is the first time Pitt has been swept this season. That leaves only the two Central's and Northeastern as the only teams not to be swept yet in an MIAA series. The sweep for Hays is the Tiger's first MIAA sweep since 2016 (they had a couple of 4 game sweeps against RMAC opponents in 2020).

The Mules outscored Pitt 41-10 in the series. The 10-3 game 1 was the closest game of the series. Dusty Stroup won MIAA hitter of the week for the second consecutive week. Stroup was 11-16 with 7 extra base hits, 7 runs & 9 rbi. He was 5-5 in the finale with 2 HR and 6 RBI.

The MIAA has 12 schools that compete in baseball but 2 joined recently. Hays, Northeastern & Washburn had losing MIAA records in 2019. Southern in 2018, Pitt in 2017, Northwest in 2016, CentralOK in 2016, Western in 2010, Emporia in 2000 and CentralMO in 1984. (Emporia and CentralMO took some research in old online media guides. CentralMO lists the MIAA record in the year-by-year results but Emporia doesn't so I had to eyeball it and manually count several seasons. Hopefully some Hornet fan can correct me if I'm wrong.) Both Emporia & Western have 15 losses this season. 2 more MIAA losses and their streaks come to an end. CentralMO has already kept their streak alive for another season.

There are 2 series this week involving teams with winning MIAA records. The big series is the battle for 2nd place as Southern hosts Northeastern.

The other is the battle of the Central's. The Bronchos were the only MIAA team to win their series (2-1) against the Mules in 2019. (The Mule fan in me feels the need to point out that Mules won all 3 games the two played in the post season as the Mules beat the Chos for both the MIAA tournament and Warrensburg sub regional championships.) The Bronchos also won the series (2-1) in 2018.

                        Week 8

                        Sweeps for CentralMO(CentralOK) & Hays(Northwest)
                        2-1 series wins for Western(Emporia), Southern(Northeastern), Pitt(Newman) & Washburn(Rogers)

Missouri sweeping Oklahoma in the battle of the Centrals leaves only CentralMO & Northeastern as the only teams to not be swept. Southern's series win over Northeastern leaves CentralMO as the only team not to lose a series. This the 7th consecutive sweep for CentralMO and the 2nd consecutive for Hays.

CentralMO's 22 game winning streak matches the Mules second longest winning streak ever in 1999 (the Mules won 27 straight in 1996). Both of those streaks had non-conference and/or post season games in the streaks so I believe 22 (and counting) is their longest MIAA winning streak ever.

The Mules outscored the Bronchos 28-3 in the series. Erik Webb homered in the first 2 games and beat out an infield single in his final at bat of game 3 to extend his hitting streak to 27 games.

There were several notable starting pitching outings this weekend. Connor Dryer pitched 6 shutout innings in the Mules 7-1 win on Sunday. He allowed 3 hits, walking none and struck out 7. Jake Burton allowed only 1 run in 6-2/3 innings in the Hornets 5-1 win in the 1st game on Saturday. He allowed 5 hits, walking 2 and struck out 10. Peyton Ingalls allowed 1 run in 7-1/3 innings in the Gorillas 5-1 win on Sunday. He allowed 6 hits, no walks and struck out 7.

Both games of Saturday's Northeastern @ Southern DH had great pitching performances. Zach Parish tossed 7 shutout innings in the Lion's 5-0 win in game 1. He allowed 2 hits, walked 4 and struck out 13. Nic Swanson threw 8 shutout innings before allowing a 2-run homer in the 9th in the River Hawks 3-2 victory in game 2. He finished with 8-2/3 innings, 9 hits, 2 runs, 0 walks and 14 strikeouts.

None of those with be the MIAA Pitcher of the Week, however, that will be Mason Green. He tossed a complete (9 inning) game shutout in the Mules 6-0 win in the 1st game on Saturday. He faced only 28 batters allowing only an infield single, walking none and struck out 13.

The only series involving teams with winning MIAA records this week is Pitt @ Southern.

Week 9 ended on Monday. In all 6 matchups, the team that won the 1st game also won the 2nd. CentralOK(Western), Northeastern(Emporia) & Pitt(Southern) completed the sweep. CentralMO(Northwest), Washburn(Hays) & Rogers(Newman) dropped the finale.

Going into the weekend, CentralMO had eliminated all but Southern, Northeasten & Pitt from a shot at the MIAA title. The magic number to eliminate Pitt (9 games back with 9 to play) was 1 (CentralMO win or Pitt loss) and the magic number to eliminate Southern & Northeastern was 4 (6 games back with 9 to play). CentralMO's 2 wins eliminated Pitt and Southern's 3 losses combined with CentralMO's 2 wins eliminated the Lions. The magic number to eliminate Northeastern is now 2 (5 games back with 6 to play). The Mules play the River Hawks this weekend so a CentralMO win would also mean a Northeastern loss and eliminate the River Hawks.

Those 4 teams have at least an 8 game lead on Hays (who currently sits in 9th place) so all have clinched a spot in the MIAA tournament. Next is CentralOK who will play 3 fewer games than everyone except Newman so I can't just use the magic number formula (games remaining + 1 - games ahead). If CentralOK loses all 6 remaining games they would be 43%. That's better than Emporia (42%), Western (42%) or Newman (40%) would be if they won all 6 remaining games. Hays would finish at 45% with all wins but falls to 42% with a loss. CentralOK jumps to 47% with a win so their magic number to make the tournament is 1.

Next is Washburn. Their magic number to eliminate Newman is 1, Emporia/Western is 2 & Hays is 3. Rogers magic number to eliminate Newman is 2, Emporia/Western is 3 & Hays is 4.

Northwest is currently in the last spot. Their magic number to eliminate Newman is 3, Emporia/Western is 4 & Hays is 5. Northwest plays Southern this week and then Washburn, both are ahead of Northwest in the standings. Hays plays Emporia this week and then Newman, both are behind Hays in the standings.

Going into the weekend, CentralMO had the longest active MIAA winning streak at 22 games followed by (believe it or not) Hays at 6 games. Now the longest active streak is Pitt at 4 games followed by CentralOK & Northeastern at 3.

Not only did Northwest stop CentralMO's winning streak at 24 on Sunday, they also stopped Erik Webb's 29 game hitting streak. Webb fell short of Brayden Whitney's CentralMO & MIAA record of 32 games set back in 1998.

                           2 Northeastern 20-7 74.1 5.0 (44.1) 23-10
                           3 Southern 17-10 63.0 8.0 (51.9) 24-10

                            Week 10
                            Sweeps for Emporia(Hays), Southern(Northwest) & Pitt(Western).
                            2-1 series wins for CentralMO(Northeastern), CentralOK(Rogers) & Washburn(Newman).

When CentralMO won the first game of the series, they clinched the outright MIAA title with a 6 game lead and (at the time) 5 games remaining. Clinching a 33 game conference schedule with 5 games remaining is like an MLB team clinching their division with a 25 game lead and 24 games remaining. The Mules have dominated the MIAA. They have not lost a series and everyone else has lost at least 2.

CentralOK & Washburn clinched spots in the MIAA tournament and Rogers magic number is 2 over both Emporia & Northwest.

Emporia's sweep combined with Northwest being swept has the 2 teams tied for the last spot 2 games ahead of Hays. Emporia plays at Pitt and Northwest hosts Washburn. Emporia won their series with Northwest and would have the tie breaker. Hays still has an outside shot at 8th but they would have to sweep Newman, have Pitt sweep Emporia and have Washburn win at least 2 over Northwest. Hays must finish ahead of Emporia but only have to catch Northwest.

The NCAA announced that the Central Regional will be hosted by CentralMO in Warrensburg. Barring a total collapse by the Mules, they are very likely to be 1 of the 6 teams in the regional. They also announced the first regional rankings. The 8 teams listed as "Under Consideration" are:

                            GAC: Southern Ark
                            MIAA: CentralMO, Southern & Pitt
NSIC: Augi, Crookston, Mankato & St Cloud

                            11 Newman 7-20 25.9 18.5 (51.9) 8-21
                            12 Western 8-22 26.7 19.0 (45.5) 10-26

Pitt, down 3 in the bottom of the 9th, scored 2 and loaded the bases but Emporia held on and won the first game of the series. That win eliminates Hays & Northwest since the Bearcats lost the first 2 games of the series with Washburn. The best either team can do is tie Emporia and both lost their series with the Hornets.

Emporia could catch Rogers for 7th but Rogers won the series when the 2 played so Emporia would have to sweep and Rogers get swept.

We know the 8 teams, but as of now we only know the #1 seed.
