  • 2022 MIAA Baseball

It's my favorite time of the year, baseball season. MIAA week 3 is underway, here's what has happened so far.

    Week 1

    Sweeps for CentralMO(Northwest), Northeastern(Emporia) & Washburn(Hays).
    2-1 series wins for CentralOK(Western), Pitt(Southern) & Newman(Rogers).

    Week 2
    Sweeps for CentralMO(Northeastern), Pitt(Western) & Washburn(Newman).
    2-1 series wins for CentralOK(Rogers), Emporia(Hays) & Southern(Northwest).

A couple of notes on my standings. I use the games back method to rank everyone. This compares how each team has done in relation to .500. The MIAA does not use this method, they use W/L% which can (but usually doesn't) reward teams for not playing games.

The Opp% is conference games only. I'm way too lazy to figure this out for all games. It's way too early for opp% to matter. An example is Emporia. Their opp% is 0.0 and they have played Northeastern, who was picked to finish 2nd in the MIAA. Northeastern was swept the next week by team picked first. So since the Hornets other opponent, Hays, was also swept by Washburn. Their opponents have won 0 games that weren't played against Emporia.

The opp% will matter as we get deeper into the season. In 2019, after 7 weeks, CentralOK was 12-9 but their opp% was 65.1%. It wasn't a surprise when the Bronchos won 10 of their last 12 games.

    Code:
    POS SCHOOL W-L % GB OPP% D2
     1 CentralMO 6-0 100.0 0.0 (66.7) 12-3
        Washburn 6-0 100.0 0.0 (50.0) 15-4
     3 Pitt 5-1 83.3 1.0 (50.0) 10-7
     4 CentralOK 4-2 66.7 2.0 (16.7) 10-6
     5 Northeastern 3-3 50.0 3.0 (83.3) 13-6
        Southern 3-3 50.0 3.0 (50.0) 12-8
     7 Newman 2-4 33.3 4.0 (66.7) 12-7
        Emporia 2-4 33.3 4.0 (0.0) 8-11
        Rogers 2-4 33.3 4.0 (33.3) 7-11
    10 Northwest 1-5 16.7 5.0 (66.7) 5-11
        Western 1-5 16.7 5.0 (66.7) 3-12
        Hays 1-5 16.7 5.0 (50.0) 2-16

Note: The OPP% is conference games only.
Non-conference games against conference opponents are not included.
If no games are cancelled, everyone will finish at 50%.

    Week 3 wrapped up Monday.
    Sweeps for CentralMO(Emporia), Southern(CentralOK), Rogers(Hays) & Pitt(Northwest).
    2-1 series wins for Newman(Western) & Northeastern(Washburn).

Northeastern & Washburn combined for 85 runs in their series as Northeastern outscored the Bods 43-42. They also had more hits (42-38) but Washburn hit more home runs (14-8). Most of those numbers came after Seth Key tossed 7 scoreless innings allowing only 4 hits in Northeastern's 4-0 win in the opening game of the series on Saturday.

Sunday's game was crazy. The Hawks had a 13-9 lead after 6 innings. The Bods scored 6 in the top of the 7th to take a 15-13 lead. The Hawks answered with 5 in the bottom of the inning to retake the lead 18-15. Washburn tied the game in the top of the 8th but the Hawks answered with 2 more in the bottom. Washburn's Brett Ingram tied the game at 20 in the top of the 9th with his 3rd home run of the day. (He was 5/7 in the game with 3 HR's and 6 RBI.) Washburn held the Hawk scoreless in the bottom of the 9th and scored 3 runs in the top of the 10th to take a 23-20 lead. The first 3 batters in the bottom of the 10th for the Hawks walked. The 4th batter drove in a run getting hit by pitch (21-23). The 5th batter also walked for another RBI (22-23). After 2 strikeouts, Brock Reller got the Hawks only hit of the inning driving in 2 runs for a 24-23 win. In all 47 runs, 39 hits & 12 home runs.

Washburn avoided the sweep on Monday with a 19-15 win in a game that included 10 home runs.

At this point Northwest has played the toughest schedule having played the 1st, 2nd & 4th place teams. The conference mid week games started yesterday but these standings are through Monday's games:
    Code:

Week 4 is in the books.

      Midweek wins for CentralMO(Western), CentralOK(Northeastern), Pitt(Emporia), Hays(Newman), Rogers(Southern) & Washburn(Northwest).

      Weekend series sweeps for CentralMO(Newman), CentralOK(Hays) & Rogers(Western).
      2-1 series wins for Emporia(Northwest), Washburn(Southern) & Northeastern(Pitt).

During the broadcast of the first game, Newman's broadcaster talked of how the Jets were in the top 4 in the MIAA in most offensive stats. They had a rough weekend going 14/85 or .165. They were outscored 39-8 and hit only 1 HR while allowing 7.

The series started with a complete game (7 inning run rule) 2-hit shutout for Collin Jones. He struck out 8 and didn't walk anyone. Game 2 was a much different 2 hitter. The Mule's starter allowed 1 run on 2 hits but was pulled after walking the first 2 batters in the 3rd inning, his 4th & 5th walks of the game. 2 relievers allowed no hits in 5 innings and the Mules won 15-1 in another 7 inning run rule game. Game 3 went the distance with the Mules winning 11-7.

The weekend had 2 series featuring teams in the top half of the conference. Pitt and Northeastern split the first 2 games. Pitt took a 12-11 on a Brett Daley grand slam in the top of the 9th in game 3 but Northeastern tied the game scoring on a wild pitch in the bottom of the inning. Pitt took a 13-12 lead in the top of the 10th on a Garrett McGowan HR. In the bottom of the inning Northeastern had a ground out, a single, a walk and an HBP to load the bases. That was followed by a called strikeout and a walk to tie the game. Based on the reactions of both teams, the calls on both batters would be considered borderline. Neither team was happy with the call that went against them. The next batter, Matt Kaiser, hit a grand slam for a 17-13 win for the River Hawks. While everyone was rounding the bases, to say Pitt's catcher went off on the home plate umpire would be an understatement.

In the other series, Southern scored 3 in the 8th and 1 in the 9th of the first game to erase Washburn's 8-4 lead. The Bods scored 1 in the top of the 10th but Southern answered with 2 in the bottom for a 10-9 win. In the second game, Southern took a 4-2 lead into the 9th. Washburn scored 6 in the top of the 9th capped off by a 3 run homer by Tyler Clark-Chiapparelli. Southern also had a Cole Robinson 3 run homer in the bottom of the inning but fell a run short 8-7. In game 3, Washburn out scored the Lions 7-1 over the final 5 innings to take the series with an 8-4 win.

          Week 5 was completed yesterday.

Sweeps for CentralMO(Rogers) & Pitt(Hays). Hays has been swept in 4 of the 5 weekends.
2-1 series wins for Newman(CentralOK), Southern(Emporia), Washburn(Western) & Northwest(Northeastern). Newman won the rubber game while Emporia, Western & Northeastern avoided being swept.

The CentralMO/Rogers series was the only one between two teams in the top half of the standings. In game one the Mules broke open a 5-4 game with 7 in the bottom of the 6th and won the game 13-5. Every starting Mule batter had at least one hit and scored at least one run. Colin Jones (5-0) got the win giving up 4 runs (only 1 was earned) in 5-2/3 innings.

The Mules also had a big 6th inning in game two erasing 2-4 deficit with 8 runs capped off with a 3 run HR by Brennen vanBreusegen. Tyler Rardin (2-0), who entered the game in the top of the 6th with 2 on & no outs, got the first batter foul out to the catcher on a bad bunt and struck out the next two. He was the pitcher of record when the Mules had their big inning and was the winning pitcher. After Rogers scored 3 in the top of the 8th, Brady Gavin relieved with 2 on & 2 outs. He retired all 4 batters he faced for his 2nd save in the Mules 10-7 win. The Mules haven't had many close games as that was only the 3rd save for the team.

Rogers scored 1 in the top of the 1st in game 3 but the Mules answered with 1 in the bottom of the inning. Rogers scored 1 in the top of the 3rd and lead until the Mules scored 1 in the bottom of the 5th. Each team scored 2 in their half of the 6th. The Mules took the lead for the first time in the game when Isaiah Pani drove in what would prove to be the game winner with a triple in the bottom of the 8th. Josh Bortka (2-0), who threw a scoreless 8th, got the win and Brady Gavin retired all 3 batters he faced in the 9th for his 3rd save as the Mules won 5-4.

Colin Jones has pitched at least 5 inning in 6 of his 7 starts. He pitched only 4 innings (by design) in the first game of the season. In the other 18 games, the Mules starter has only pitched at least 5 innings once. Mule starters are 6-2 (Jones is 5-0) while the relievers are 16-1.

All of the midweek games were played yesterday. Based on the standings, there was only 1 upset as 10th place Northwest beat 3rd place Washburn 7-0. #1 CentralMO beat #11 Western 6-5 in the closest game of the day. The most surprising score probably happened in the battle of teams tied for 4th as Southern beat Rogers 25-2. The other team tied for 4th, CentralOK beat #7 Northeastern 9-1. #2 Pitt beat #9 Emporia 11-2 and #8 Newman beat #12 Hays 18-6.

Newman, Southern & Northwest evened their season series at a game each while the Central's & Pitt took a 2-0 lead.

Week 6 finished and I believe for the first time all season weather didn't force any games to be moved from the day they were originally scheduled. All 6 series had a game on Friday, Saturday & Sunday.

Sweeps for Southern(Hays) & Northeastern(Western). This is the 5th time Hays has been swept in 6 weekend series and the 3rd for Western.

2-1 series wins for CentralMO(Washburn), CentralOK(Pitt), Rogers(Emporia) & Northwest(Newman). The series losses for Pitt & Washburn were their second of the season. Each team in the conference has now lost at least 2 series except for CentralMO.

The Centrals were the only visiting teams to win on Friday and all the home teams won on Saturday. The Centrals won again on Sunday and Emporia & Newman also won to avoid being swept.

There were 2 series where both teams had winning MIAA records when the games started on Friday. CentralMO @ Washburn & CentralOK @ Pitt.

CentralOK scored 5 runs in the first 3 innings on Friday and held on for a 5-3 win. Saturday's game was a pitchers duel won by Pitt's Peyton Ingalls who only allowed 1 run while CentralOK's Tucker Elliott allowed 2 (1 earned). Relievers allowed 1 run for each team in Pitt's 3-2 win. The bats came alive on Sunday as the teams combined for 30 hits and 25 runs in CentralOK's 14-11 win. CentralOK's Kyler Patterson got saves in both wins and is now tied for the league lead with 7.

In the other series, CentralMO won on Friday 9-3 as Colin Jones (6-0) allowed 2 runs in 6 innings and is tied for the league lead in wins. Washburn handed the Mules their first MIAA loss as they spread the Mules 15-4 on Saturday. Mules relievers lost only their 2nd game allowing 11 runs (8 earned) in 3 innings. Washburn hit 4 homers, 2 by Parker Dunn who was 4 for 4 with 4 runs scored.

Sunday's game was the only close one in the series. The Mules scored 1 in the top of the 1st but the Bods answered with 2 in the 2nd. The Mules tied the game in the top of the 6th but the Bods scored an unearned run (the only run allowed by Mules relievers in 7 innings) and took a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the inning and that scored held until the 9th. With 2 outs and nobody on, the next Mule batter was hit by pitch followed by a walk. Donovan Ditto then hit a 3-run pitch hit home run (the only HR the Mules hit all weekend) to give the Mules a 5-3 lead. Mule closer, Brady Gavin (3-1) who didn't allow a hit in the final 2 innings got the win.

Southern pitching was outstanding this week. After beating Rogers 25-2 on Tuesday, they didn't allow Hays to score all weekend.

Most teams play non-con games this week and there are 3 series this weekend involving teams with winning MIAA records. #3t Southern @ #1 CentralMO, #6t Rogers @ #2 Pitt and #5 CentralOK @ #3t Washburn.

                Week 7 finished today.

Sweeps for CentralMO(Southern) & Northeastern(Hays), the 6th time Hays has been swept and the 1st time for Southern. That leaves only CentralMO, Pitt & Washburn as teams that have not been swept in an MIAA series.

CentralMO & Northeastern were the only teams to win on both Friday & Saturday. CentralOK(Washburn), Emporia(Newman) & Pitt(Rogers) lost on Friday, won Saturday & Sunday while Western(Northwest) won on Friday, lost Saturday & won Sunday.

There were 3 series involving teams with winning MIAA records. #6t Rogers jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the 3rd at #2 Pitt on Friday and held on for a 5-3 win. Jordan Ewig (5-3) got the win and Octavio Sanches his 5th save. On Saturday Pitt erased a 0-4 deficit with 5 in the 5th. After Rogers tied the game in the 6th, Kaden Fowler in the 7th & Cade Clemons in the 8th hit solo shots for a 7-5 Pitt win. Peyton Ingalls (5-1) with the win and Zach Nagel recorded hit 1st save. Pitt scored 15 runs in the first 3 innings on Sunday in route to a 23-3 win. Ben Des Rosiers (5-1) recorded the win in a game featuring 6 home runs, twice as many as were hit in first 2 games.

#3 Washburn never trailed Friday in their 7-3 win over #4t CentralOK. Casey Steward (4-0) with the win. CentralOK never trailed the rest of the weekend winning 12-3 on Saturday and 10-2 on Sunday. Tucker Elliott (3-3) & Jacob Bailey (3-3) with the wins.

#3t Southern allowed #1 CentralMO to score 35 runs this weekend after not allowing Hays to score last weekend. On Friday, Colin Jones (7-0) got off to his worst start of the season surrendering a grand slam to Jordan Fitzpatrick before recording his first out. He settled down allowing only 1 other run in his 5 innings pitched. The Mules scored 3 in the 1st and 4 in the 2nd on their way to a 21-6 win.

Saturday was a pitcher's game as CentralMO's Max Abramovich allowed only a solo shot by Tommy Stevenson in his 5 innings pitched but got no decision. Brennen vanBreusegen hit a 2-run home run in the 6th to give the Mules a 2-1 lead. Southern scored an unearned run in the top of the 7th off winning pitcher Ethan Peterson (3-0) but the Mules answered with an unearned run in the bottom of the 7th. Brady Gavin entered the game with 1 out in the 8th and retired all 5 batters he faced for his 4th save in the Mules 3-2 win.

The Mules never trailed in their 11-3 win on Sunday. Tyler Rardin (4-0) got the win by getting the Mules out of a bases loaded jam in the top of the 4th by not allowing anyone to score and preserving the Mules 3 run lead. 6 of the Mules first 7 runs were driven in by John Prudhom with a sac fly in the 1st, a 2-run HR in the 3rd & a 3 run shot in the 5th.

Prudhom was 6/10 in the series with 4 runs, 3 HR's & 8 RBI. Adding in the midweek game against Drury, he was 7/13 with 7 runs, 4 HR's & 10 RBI for the week but is not the leading Mule candidate for hitter of the week. That would be Brennen vanBreusegen who went 12/18 with 10 runs, 4 HR's and 13 RBI.

Weather permitting all of the midweek MIAA series wrap up on Tuesday.

The midweek games finished yesterday. Of the 3 teams going for the sweep only CentralMO(Western) was successful. CentralOK(Northeastern) & Pitt(Emporia) lost. In the other series Newman(Hays), Southern(Rogers) & Washburn(Northwest) won the rubber game.

There were 3 close games and 3 spreads as Newman scored at least 3 runs in every inning but the 2nd in their 24-7 win over Hays. Northeastern scored 6 in the 8th in their 18-5 win over CentralOK. The Mules got only their second win of the season by a starting pitcher not named Colin Jones as Grayson Senn got the win in their 15-1 win over Western.

In Southern's 2-1 win over Rogers, Southern scored both runs on a 2 out single by Matt Miller in the top of the 1st. Rogers got their run in the bottom of the 6th on an RBI ground out. The Hillcats tried to also score a runner from 2nd on the play but he was gunned down at the plate. Rogers had 2 hits and a walk in the bottom of the 9th but the first runner was picked off and none of the 3 got past 2nd base.

Emporia had a 2-run homer by Sam Chaput and a grand slam by Dylan Werries in the bottom of the 9th to beat Pitt 11-10. Washburn scored 3 in the bottom of the 4th to break a 4-4 tie and held on to win 7-5.

The top 2 teams play this weekend as #1 CentralMO hosts #2 Pitt. The Mules have a 6 game lead with 9 to play so if they win the series they will clinch the regular season championship.

Week 8 and we already have a league champion. When #1 CentralMO won the first 2 games against #2 Pitt, they expanded their lead to 8 games with 7 games remaining. The Mules were also the only team to sweep. The sweep of Pitt leaves CentralMO & Washburn as the only teams not to be swept.

Northeastern(Rogers) was the only other game 1 winner to also win game 2 but lost game 3. The other 4 series had rubber games won by CentralOK(Northwest), Washburn(Emporia), Western(Hays) & Newman(Southern).

Don't have time to go into detail on the week but Brennen van Breusegen continued his hot hitting this week going 9 of 15. 6 of the 9 hits were for extra bases. He scored 7 runs and drove in 8.

Week 9 and now everyone has lost a series.

                        Sweeps for Northwest(Hays), Northeastern(Southern) & Pitt(Newman).
                        2-1 series wins for CentralOK(CentralMO), Emporia(Western) & Rogers(Washburn).

OK's win in the battle of the Centrals was MO's first series loss of the season and their first series loss since they lost to CentralOK in 2019. The Mules also lost the series CentralOK in 2018 so 3 of their last 5 series losses have been to CentralOK. The Mules lost all 3 series 1-2 but swept the series they won in 2021 so their MIAA record against CentralOK going back to 2018 is 6-6. The Bronchos are the only team the Mules don't have a winning MIAA record against in that time frame. The Mules are 5-0 against them in the post season (MIAA & NCAA) in that same time frame.

The regular season wraps up this weekend and the "best of 3" first round of the MIAA tournament is the next week with #1 hosting #8, #2 hosting #7, #3 hosting #6 & #4 hosting #5. The 4 winners advance to Edmond for a double elimination the following weekend.

We know the Mules are #1 but there are ties for 2nd, 4th, 6th & 8th. For those that don't know the "magic number" is computed by adding 1 to the games remaining and subtracting the number of games ahead in the loss column. So since the 2 teams tied for 2nd are 2 games ahead of both tied for 4th, the magic number for Northeastern and Pitt to guarantee being at home for the 1st round is 2. Any combination of Northeastern wins and/or Washburn losses totaling 2 would guarantee home field for Northeastern. The same with CentralOK. Pitt is playing at Washburn so if Pitt can win a game, Washburn will lose one and Pitt will guarantee home field.

Washburn & CentralOK have a 3 game lead over Southern & Rogers so their magic number to finish no worse than 5th is 1. CentralOK won the series with Washburn so they have the tiebreaker if the 2 wind up tied for 4th.

Southern & Rogers have a 3 game lead over Newman, Emporia & Northwest so their magic number to qualify for the tournament is 1. So the most likely scenario has whichever of the those 3 wins the most games this weekend being the 8th and final team. Emporia won the series against each of the other 2 and Northwest won the series against Newman.

This weekend Emporia plays at CentralOK, Newman is at Northeastern and Northwest is at Rogers. The 2 teams that have already been eliminated Western is at Southern and Hays hosts CentralMO.

The first regional rankings are out.

The big surprise to me is Southern. I don't understand why the 4 losses (Barry, Palm Beach Atlantic & Nova twice) on their Florida trip aren't being counted. Before beating Drury earlier this week Southern had 25-20 record but the rankings list them at 25-16.

We're down to the final game for everyone.

Northeastern has beaten Newman twice while Pitt has split with Washburn. Since the best Pitt can do is tie and Northeastern won the series when the two played, Northeastern will be #2. CentralOK has beaten Emporia twice and could catch Pitt with another win and a Pitt loss. CentralOK won the series with Pitt and would finish #3. Pitt is #3 with a win or an Emporia win. CentralOK won the series with Washburn so they can finish no worse than #4. Washburn is #5.

Rogers is now a game up on Southern since they have beaten Northwest twice while Southern has split with Western. Rogers finishes #6 with a win or a Southern loss. Southern won the series with Rogers so a Southern win and a Rogers loss means Southern is #6. The team that is not #6 is #7.

All 3 teams tied for #8 have lost both games so far. Emporia won the series against both so Emporia is #8 if they win or all 3 lose. Northwest won the series with Newman so they will be #8 if they win and Emporia loses. The only way Newman is #8 is a Newman win while both of the other two lose.
