Another week, another matchup of high-powered conference foes as Grand Valley State and Ashland square off Saturday night at Lubbers Stadium, add in the classic “Axe Bowl” rivalry game, a West-Michigan showdown between two unbeatens in Davenport and Ferris State, and Wayne State eyeing a 2-0 start in conference play, and there’s your week 5 storylines.

The second weekend of GLIAC play is a welcomed sight as Saturday’s slate features four conference battles and just one nonconference tilt, meaning there are only five games to preview instead of eight or nine like we had during nonconference play. Wayne State finally gets a crack at a GLIAC opponent as the Warriors will welcome the unbeaten, and now 25th-ranked-Saginaw Valley State Cardinals to Tom Adams Field for a night cap and WSU’s first conference game of the season.

Some highs and lows for the GLIAC in week two of nonconference play which ultimately saw the conference post a 6-3 mark for the day. Statement wins for the powers that be with Ferris State winning big on the road at Central Washington, and Grand Valley State earning a hard-fought 28-24 comeback win at home against Delta State, but don’t for one second sleep on our other 2-0 teams!

Five wins and three losses for the GLIAC in the non-conference slate in the opening week of the season. Coincidently, that was also my record in picking games this week, not that anyone cares, but a 5-3 mark to open the season, I’ll take it, but much room for improvement.
