NE10 Week One Preview

Football is back.  It is Week One, and we are ready for some football.  Let the games begin.

 # 6 Shepherd (0-0, 0-0 PSAC East) at Southern Connecticut (0-0, 0-0 NE10)

When: September 1st, 5:30 PM

All-Time Series:  First Meeting

My Thoughts:  PSAC East vs NE10 Part I

Shepherd won the region in 2021 and lost to eventual national champion Ferris State in the semifinals.  The Rams have their quarterback and will look to repeat his 2021 Harlon Hill season.  They are highly ranked in all the preseason polls and will look to make another run for a national championship in 2022.

Southern Connecticut will look to open 2022 as they did in 2021, by upsetting a top opponent.  The Owls knocked off Division I foe Central Connecticut a year ago and will look to knock off a solid opponent on their home turf.  They have a bunch of solid players back and look to make some noise in the league.

Shepherd has been a top program in the region for years and with an outstanding quarterback back, they will easily take this game on the road.

Prediction:  Shepherd 45 Southern Connecticut 13

American International (0-0, 0-0 NE10) at Frostburg St (0-0, 0-0 MEC)

When: September 1st, 7:00 PM

All-Time Series:  First Meeting

My Thoughts:  Another tough opening opponent.

American International went 4-6 in 2021 and has not been shy at playing tough opening weekend matchups.  They will have some defensive players that should be able to slow down the opponent’s offensive.  Their own offensive will need to make some plays to keep the game close.

Frostburg State has taken the Mountain East by storm and would have been in the 2021 playoffs if they had been eligible.  They averaged over 40 points per game and their only defeat was to Notre Dame College.  The Bobcats have a lot of their key players back and look to make another run this season.

Frostburg State will control the game early and take their home opener.

Prediction:  Frostburg State 38 American International 10

Millersville (0-0, 0-0 PSAC East) at Saint Anselm (0-0, 0-0 NE10)

When: September 1st, 7:00 PM

All-Time Series:  First Meeting

My Thoughts:  PSAC East vs NE10 Part II

Millersville was picked to finish seventh in the PSAC East for 2022.  They have plenty of starters back in the fold and are hoping for a solid 2022.  They finished 2-9 in 2021 but had a tough stretch in October when they played several teams that eventually made the playoffs.

Saint Anselm has several key players back in 2022 and looking to improve upon their 3-6 2021 campaign.  The Hawks will be able to score points with their quarterback and receivers back in the fold for another season.  The defense will need to step up and play well for 60 minutes.

Saint Anselm was ready to break out for the past couple of years and I think 2022 will be the season.

Prediction:  Saint Anselm 34 Millersville 17

East Stroudsburg (0-0, 0-0 PSAC East) at Pace (0-0, 0-0 NE10)

When: September 1st, 7:00 PM

All-Time Series:  East Stroudsburg leads the series, 3-0-0

My Thoughts:  PSAC East vs NE10 Part III

East Stroudsburg struggled down the stretch in 2021 and finished 5-6.  The Warriors are picked to finish fifth in a talented PSAC East for 2022.  They will look to move the ball up and down the field through the air and hope that their defense can hold their opponents in check.

Pace had a forgettable 2021 season as they battled injuries and several close losses all season long.  They have some experienced players back on the field and are hoping for a rebound in 2022.  If the Setters can stay healthy and those experienced players are able to contribute, it will be a solid season in Pleasantville.

This game could be one-sided or a close one.  I am leaning towards a close one with East Stroudsburg sneaking out of town with the win.

Prediction:  East Stroudsburg 28 Pace 24

Bentley (0-0, 0-0 NE10) at West Chester (0-0, 0-0 PSAC East)

When: September 2nd, 6:00 PM

All-Time Series:  West Chester leads the series, 4-1-0

My Thoughts:  PSAC East vs NE10 Part IV

Bentley is coming off one of their better seasons as they made it to the playoffs last year.  The Falcons were hit hard with graduation but have some key defensive players back.  The offense will be the one to watch as they will have new faces at some key positions.

West Chester is looking to forget the second half of their 2021 season.  They lost three of their final four games and lost their chance at making the playoffs.  The Golden Rams are slotted to finish third in the PSAC East as they have several key players back.  Their defense will be the backbone of the team.

West Chester will have the home-field advantage and open their season on the right foot.

Prediction:  West Chester 31 Bentley 14

# 14 Kutztown (0-0, 0-0 PSAC East) at Assumption (0-0, 0-0 NE10)

When: September 3rd, 12:00 PM

All-Time Series:  PSAC East vs NE10 Part V

My Thoughts:  Series tied at 3-3-0

Kutztown had a very successful 2021 campaign as they won the PSAC title and advanced deep into the playoffs.  The Bears are picked to be in contention once again as they were slotted second behind Shepherd.  They have several starters back and will once again be solid on both sides of the ball.

Assumption is looking to improve upon a 5-5 season in 2021.  The Greyhounds have some holes to fill but they have been doing a great job recruiting over the years, so they have built some depth.  They will need to find a way to match the strength in the trenches to compete with a solid PSAC team.

This game will be a close one as both teams have talent on their roster.  But experience will play a factor in the fourth quarter and Kutztown will take the victory.

Prediction:  Kutztown 27 Assumption 22

Edinboro (0-0, 0-0 PSAC West) at Franklin Pierce (0-0, 0-0 NE10)

When: September 3rd, 1:00 PM

All-Time Series:  First Meeting

My Thoughts:  PSAC West vs NE10 Part I

Edinboro was predicted to finish fifth in the PSAC West by the coaches.  The Scots won their final three games of last year and looking to carry that momentum to this season.  They are traditionally a balanced offensive attack and rely on their defense to make stops.

Franklin Pierce is playing their third season at the Division II level and is ready to make a breakthrough.  They have several key players back on both sides of the ball and will look to grab their first victory against a Division II opponent.

This is a good matchup for Franklin Pierce to gauge how their season will develop.  I think that Edinboro will win the game, but the Ravens will be competitive.

Prediction:  Edinboro 34 Franklin Pierce 20

# 18 New Haven (0-0, 0-0 NE10) at # 12 Bowie State (0-0, 0-0 CIAA)

When: September 3rd, 1:00 PM

All-Time Series:  New Haven leads the series, 3-1-0

My Thoughts:  Two ranked teams in the game of the weekend.

New Haven had a great 2021 season and looking for even more this year.  They were picked to win the NE10 and have several key weapons back in the fold.  Plus, they have several transfers on the roster to step up and fill in for key graduated players from last year.  The Chargers are poised to make another playoff run this year.

Bowie State is the favorite to win the CIAA in 2022.  They have a new coach but return a bunch of all-conference players from a team that advanced to the quarterfinals last year.  They have several key defensive players back and will look to move the ball with their big offensive line.

It is great when two top-notch programs play each other during the opening weekend.  It will help to see which team is ready for prime time.  I think that New Haven is going to have a solid season and it helps to beat a ranked team on the road.

Prediction:  New Haven 24 Bowie State 21
