GLIAC: 2-1
California 30 Hillsdale 22Gannon 36 Lake Erie 33
Lake Erie held the lead for nearly the entire game in this Thursday night contest. Late game heroics for the Golden Knights propelled them victory in front of a capacity crowd of 2,500. The winning score came on a fourth and two with little more than a minute to play. In his first game, redshirt freshman quarterback Liam Nadler threw for a school record 420 yards and four touchdowns. Despite the victory, the stat that stands out to me is 240 rushing yards for Lake Erie to negative 18 for Gannon. The Knights cannot have stat lines like this when they get into PSAC Western division play.
Notre Dame College 59 Meryhurst 42
In the only D2 loss for the PSAC in week one, Meryhurst turned the ball over 8 times and gave up 543 yards of total offense. Despite all the setbacks, the Lakers were still alive late in the game. They put up 42 points and were within 10 late in the game. NDC's final touchdown came from just four yards out, following a turnover on downs. The Falcons' Pedro Powell rushed for 243 yards on 35 carries.
NE10: 2-0
Bloomsburg 44 Stonehill 28
The Bloomsburg rushing attack rolled up 369 yards on the ground, led by Franklyn Quiteh's 218. The Huskies struggled to put Stonehill away in the second half, but credit the Skyhawks for finding some weaknesses in the Bloomsburg defense and moving the ball in the air very effectively. Bloom's redshirt freshman quarterback Tim Kelly played respectably in his debut and executed the play action bootleg passing game very well. The Huskies found some things to work on but a 16 point victory on the road is never something to be displeased with.
IUP 33 Southern Connecticut 6
As expected, IUP dominated the line of scrimmage in a convincing victory ofver SCSU. IUP outrushed the Owls by totals of 310 to 47. Harvie Tuck and Montay Green both eclipsed 100 yards and Pat Smith complimented the running game with an efficient passing effort. IUP gave up only 192 yards of total offense and forced seven punts.
CIAA: 1-0
Cheyney 34 Lincoln 21
Doug Cook had 345 passing yards for Lincoln, but much of it was too little, too late. Cheyney scored the game's first 27 points and made it stand up for a 34-21 victory in the grand opening of Lincoln's new on campus stadium. The Wolves ran for 242 yards and forced five turnovers. The two teams combined for 39 penalties for 393 yards.
WVIAC: 4-0
Clarion 7 Fairmont State 0
Clarion scored the game's only points midway through the third quarter and made numerous defensive stands to preserve the shutout victory. Fairmont State outgained the Eagles 355 to 291 but committed 11 penalties for a total of 120 yards. Two of those penalties occurred in the red zone on FSU's final possession.
Slippery Rock 52 Seton Hill 6
A crowd of more than 8,000 turned out for the season opener at SRU and saw a dominant performance from the home team. Slippery Rock's offensive numbers were somewhat modest, considering the score, but Rock had Seton Hill outclassed in every phase of the game. The Griffons were held to 191 yards of total offense and committed 15 penalties. The Rock had an efficient debut from quarterback Jared Buck and a productive return for running back Akeem Satterfield, who topped 100 yards on just 13 carries.
Shippensburg 38 Shepherd 28Millersville 41 West Virginia Wesleyan 17
In the most surprising outcome of week one, Millersville came away with a fine victory over a Wesleyan team that handed the Marauders a 55-3 loss one year ago. Transfer quarterback Ted Stachitas served notice that he may be one of the top dual threat players in the PSAC. Stachitas threw for 166 yards and ran for 147 in the victory. The Marauder offense, one of the weakest in the league one year ago, rolled up an even 400 total yards, including several big plays for more than 20 yards.
