The two-time defending PSAC East champs enter the 2015 season as the favorite to claim the division for a third straight year. If the Huskies are going to make it back to the championship game, they may have to get there through a different rout than they took a year ago. The 2014 team returned nearly every defensive player that earned a letter the year before. The talent and experience that the Huskies on defense was enviable to say the least, and it showed on the field. Bloomsburg led the PSAC in scoring defense and total defense and also finished in the top 12 in the country in both categories. Conversely, the offense had a lot of retooling to do. The Huskies relied on the defense to carry them through the early part of the schedule until the offense found its footing. This year, the units will experience some role reversal. The offense has only a few gaps to fill while the defensive depth chart will look very different from a year ago.

I can't imagine many things that would make a Bloomsburg coach feel more comfortable than knowing that he has an experienced and cohesive offensive line - and that is what the Huskies will have this year. The 2014 roster did not have any seniors in the offensive line. Every lineman that played is back this year, which of course includes the entire starting lineup. This year's group has four seniors, led by Ryan Geiger who is a rock - and a preseason All-American - at Center. He will be entering his third season as a starter and second season as a team captain. Tackle Dakota Hoagland will also be a three year starter and a contender for post season recognition. Guards Christian Whiteside and Nick Reed are also seniors. The lone Jr. in the group is T John Garland. Among the starting five, four were first or second team All-PSAC East selections a year ago. Depth is also a strength for the line. Jr G Greg Rommel split time with Reed last year and saw a significant number of snaps. So. T Sean Secola started and played very well in the regional championship game at Concord.

The tight end group is also very experienced and very deep. Sr. Shane Quinn (14 catches, 177 yards) and Jr. Aaron Allison (13 catches, 101 yards, 3TD) make up a powerful double tight end set. Both are integral in the rushing attack and probably underutilized in the passing game. Leading receiving DJ McFadden is no longer with the team but the Huskies will have a very reliable staring pair with Sr. Connor Gades (23 catches, 257 yards, 2 TD) and Jr. Chad Hoffman (28 catches, 354 yards). Watch for Hoffman's name to show up more prominently in the post game articles. The former QB is a very disciplined route runner and has the best hands on the team. Hoffman was second on the team in receptions last year but none of his catches were in the end zone. Expect that to change quickly in 2015. Of all things, running back is the only position that may have some concerns at depth. Lawrence Elliott, who has been among the nation's top kick / punt returners the past two years, and caught 19 balls as receiver last year, will take over the starting tailback position. Backfield depth allowed the Huskies to use Elliot elsewhere but coach Paul Darragh feels that RB is his natural position and is excited to see what his speed and size can bring to the running game. Jr. Joe Parsnik should receive a lot more carries this year and don't forget about Bloom's most dangerous runner - QB Tim Kelly. Kelly is heading into this fourth year as the starter. He has more starts (36) and more wins (30) than any QB in super region 1. Passing stats are modest in Bloom's offense but Kelly is a selfless leader with a calming influence, which makes him perfect fit for the system.

The defense may need some time to come together as a unit, but don't be fooled by the numbers indicating only four starters return from last year. Everyone that will start this year played a significant role last year. They're far from inexperienced. Sr. DT Jeremiah Lowery is the only returning starter in the line, but fellow DT Ezra Ranco has played in every game for the past two seasons and actually led all linemen in total tackles last year. The defensive end spots will be held down by Sr. Tony David (20 total tackles, 3.5 sacks), who has starting experience, and Jr. Joe Wetty (17 total tackles, 7TFL, 5.5 sacks) who has been prominent in the rotation for the past two years. So. Scott Beltz will see a lot of snaps again and So. Tony Le could play end or tackle. Garrett Pope (51 total tackles, 3TFL) is the lone returning linebacker but Jr. Andrew Harris (48 total tackles) is ready for a starting role. The biggest concern is replacing All American Justin Shirt at middle linebacker.

The secondary has veteran leadership in S. Donovan Morris (64 total tackles, 5 INT) and CB Gary Postel (61 total tackles). Jerrin Toomey (37 total tackles, 4 INT) is likely to start at the other safety position with Eric Schwartz likely to see playing time as well. Miles Williams is the front runner to start at corner along side Postel. The Huskies will be a little shy on experience after the starting lineup.

The final word.
There are some areas where depth could be a concern heading into the season, but overall, there isn't a program in the PSAC that is better at reloading every year. The early crossover games will be tough, but if the Huskies can do what they did last year - survive and improve each week - they could be in championship game for the third consecutive year.
