Mid-season is here already, so it's time to take a look at where each team stacks up and see what their prospects for the rest of the year look like. These are just subjective rankings based on my observations and what each team has done so far. I'd love to hear what the res of you think. It's been a very good year so far for the MEC. From the conference championship standpoint, Shepherd is the clear favorite. Only one other team (Charleston) has less than two losses and Rams have a head to head advantage over the Eagles. It would take two losses for the Rams to fall from first place and I don't think that is likely to happen. Beyond that, I think the top four teams listed below still have a legit shot at the national playoffs. Glenville and Concord cannot afford to lose again but as of now, they're still alive.
Here is a look at how I rank the MEC at mid-season. You can read my similar report for the PSAC in The Four Quarters of the PSAC Second - Quarter
1. Shepherd (5-0, 5-0)2. Charleston (5-1, 5-1)3. Glenville State (4-2, 4-2)4. Concord (4-2, 4-2)5. West Virginia State (4-2, 4-2)6. West Liberty (3-3, 3-2)7. Fairmont State (3-2, 3-2)
8. Notre Dame (1-5, 1-4)9. Urbana (2-4, 1-4)10. UVa-Wise (0-6, 0-5)
I ranked UVa-Wise ahead of West Virginia Wesleyan most because of how bad the Bobcats have been on defense. While still winless, the Cavs have been competitive at times this year. The good news for Wise is that all of the toughest competition is out of the way. If some of those games have made them stronger and better, they should be able to compete for a win or two. The schedule for the next month is West Liberty, at Fairmont State, Urbana and at Wesleyan. All four of those teams are a bit better in terms of overall talent, but each has issues of its own. Urbana is probably their best shot since the Blue Knights are generally not a threat to score many points.
11. West Virginia Wesleyan (0-6, 0-6)[email protected] and you can follow me on Twitter @D2Chuck
