It was roughly one year ago that Seton Hill stunned the PSAC with an upset of highly favored Slippery Rock. The Griffins came very close to doing it again at IUP IUP (4-0) came early in the fourth quarter. The Crimson Hawks received the second half kickoff but were forced to punt. Seton Hill then marched 73 yards on 7 plays to extend their lead to 39-28. The PAT was blocked and returned for 2 points on a very thrilling and dramatic play. The three point swing and momentum break was huge for IUP. Had Seton Hill converted, they would have had a 12 point lead and all the momentum. Who knows how things may have played out differently, for the Griffins, who are now 3-2.
CaliforniaSlippery Rock will get some attention. In a mostly defensive football game, California was efficient and opportunistic. They forced many mistakes from SRU and took advantage in building a 28-7 halftime lead that they would never relinquish. The Vulcans were unranked in the D2football.com poll heading into the week, but I expect them to enter the top 25 this week.
WR Gary Brown became Edinboro (4-1) brought their offense to what I thought would be a shootout with ClarionMercyhurst.Gannon is a huge reward for their hard work. I have a lot of respect for what they have been able to do in the first half of the season.
The overtime loss was a heartbreaker for Gannon, but on the bright side, Zach Phillips had a breakthrouh performance throwing the ball. Phillips completed 18 of 26 for 228 yards and 2TD.
Lock Haven Shippensburg (4-1) in total offense 527 to 365 but could not get out of their way in the second half. Four straight LHU possessions in the 3rd and 4th quarters ended in turnovers. Three of them were turned into Shippensburg touchdowns, one of which was a fumble returned 98 yards by the Raiders when LHU was on the doorstop of possibly tying the game.
Shippensburg QB Ryan Zapoticky was knocked out of the game in the second quarter and did not return. Sophomore Chase Yocum stepped in and completed 3 of 5 pass attempts for 41 yards and ran for 74 yards.
Kutztown looked like they were about left for dead after an 0-3 start but they won their east division opener at Millersville and then outlasted West Chester in the rain for a 20-14 win at home. QB Collin DiGalbo played well in the poor weather completing 18 of 29 for 238 yards, 2TD and 0 INT. DL Eric Condron was a regular in the WCU backfield and ended the night with a pair of sacks. With two straight wins, the Bears are now 2-3 and 2-0 in the division.
West Chester Bloomsburg (4-1) is a bit thin in the defensive line with two impact D tackles out with injury, but MillersvilleBloomsburgCheyney (1-4). On a rainy night in the Poconos, East Stroudsburg (3-2) ran for 229 yards and downed Cheyney 54-12, but the Wolves put up 348 yards of offense, led by 250 on the ground.
There are some big contests coming this weekend, but none will be bigger than the huge collision in Califonia. IUP travels to Cal for a Saturday night prime time event, in what will easily be the game of the year in the PSAC.
LIU-Post defeated Assumption on Saturday in a thrilling defensive battle. The Pioneers are 5-0 and firmly in command of the NE10, but both teams will be factors in the regional rankings later this year, so keep an eye on their progress.
Shepherd (4-0) was idle, but Fairmont State took to the field and ran their record to 5-0 with a dominant win over Urbana. Notre Dame College is still in the race as well, improving to 4-1 with the win over Glenville State.
Winston-Salem State got over .500 for the first time this year with a win at Lincoln. The Rams are just 3-2 but should get through their south division schedule unscathed and have a shot at another CIAA championship. Keep an eye on Chowan in the north division. The Hawks are 4-1 overall and 4-0 against D2 opponents.
