The bad news for UNCP last weekend was that they lost for the third week in a row. The good news was that they found some offense against a team that has been pretty good on defense. They mounted two scoring drives in each of the first three quarters and held a slim 38-37 lead heading into the fourth. Unfortunately, Central State scored the only points in the final period and held on for a 44-38 win. I thought the defense could do better but they gave up too many big plays. As the Braves look to the future, Freshman QB Josh Jones (27-36-250, 2TD, INT) continues to show big potential.

Recent weeks have seen these two teams head in opposite directions. Wingate has won two straight after dropping three in a row, while Mars Hill has lost their last two. The Lions have had offensive success against most opponents this year, but I think Wingate is a tough match up for them. Mars Hill has been most successful when they can establish the run to compliment their strong passing game. But the Bulldogs are tough against the run and will probably commit to taking that away from Mars Hill, as Carson-Newman did last week. The Bulldogs are good at bringing pressure, getting sacks and creating turnovers. Mars Hill will move the ball well, but I think Wingate will force at least turnovers and that will help the them pull away. They will also continue to work the running game, which has been getting stronger each game.
