I have been covering the PSAC for 14 seasons, and I cannot remember such a weird Saturday as the one we just had. The fact is that upsets rarely happen in the PSAC, but there were a few games that had a lot of us shaking our heads.
SHIPPENSBURG 49, KUTZTOWN 7
This is the big one. I doubt many people outside Shippensburg gave the Red Raiders a chance. But there they were on Saturday, taking the Golden Bears behind the proverbial woodshed.
If there were a key injury or two, this might, might make some sense. But it appears that Kutztown just did not show up. It also seems like Shippensburg put together the perfect plan to pressure Kevin Morton and force him into mistakes.
Long term, this just makes it easier for Bloomsburg to run away with the PSAC East title. But it will be interesting to see if this propels Shippensburg into great things.
GANNON 30, MERCYHURST 27
The truth is that this game might have turned out differently of Travis Rearick had not gotten hurt. But that means nothing now, and the Lakers lost to their city rival again.
The Golden Knights are one of those teams that can seemingly turn it up for big games, and they must have done just that against Mercyhurst. Also, it seems as if QB Daniel Tapscott has come of age rather quickly.
If nothing else, the win makes things a little easier for Gannon when the coaches are on the recruiting trail.
BLOOMSBURG 32, EAST STROUDSBURG 20
It is hard to figure out of East Stroudsburg is just a step away from being an awfully good team, or if the Warriors are in over their head. But we do know for sure that Ray Wagner is the real deal.
East Stroudsburg held the lead for a long time in this one, but could not hang on. That is understandable. Few teams are able to jump on Bloomsburg and hang on.
Good teams find a way to win. The Huskies did just that.
IUP 19, EDINBORO 0
For all their talk during the week about wanting to make amends for the 18-0 loss last year to IUP, the Fighting Scots did not show up. Losing Cody Harris in the second half made things nearly impossible, but Edinboro looked nothing like the team that had won its first four games.
Give the Crimson Hawks credit for this: There are few things tougher to do in football than to run the ball when everyone knows you are going to run the ball. Yet IUP still rolled up 216 yards on the ground, and the Crimson Hawks only attempted two passes in the second half.
The question is this: Did IUP expose the Fighting Scots or did Edinboro just have a bad day?
C.W. POST 34, WEST CHESTER 23
The Pioneers continue their Jeckyl-and-Hyde season. But it seems like they might have found some answers on offense. And if their defense can come up with efforts like it did in this game, with nine sacks and three interceptions, the Pioneers will be a factor down the stretch.
The Rams seemed to have things going well, but this is a step backward. Teams that alternate QBs oftentimes do not have much success, and this could be one of those times. Maybe it is time to pick one and go with it.
SLIPPERY ROCK 27, CLARION 14
It is not surprising at all that Slippery Rock won this game. The score is what is surprising. I would have guessed that Cody Endres, Akeem Satterfield and Devin Goda would team up to put 50 points on the board, but credit Jay Foster and his defense for keeping Clarion in the game.
The best-kept secret in the PSAC this year is the Slippery Rock defense, which has been stellar so far. So it is not surprising the Golden Eagles did not come up with much offense.
Obvious fact: Clarion needs a running back to take the heat off QB Ben Fiscus.
CALIFORNIA 54, LOCK HAVEN 13
The most surprising thing about this is that the Bald Eagles scored at all. But, hey, give credit to Lock Haven for showing up and playing hard. It is not easy against a bear like California.
As for the Vulcans, the Pete Lalich-to-Thomas Mayo connection is white hot after a slow start. Opposing defenses should take note.
MILLERSVILLE 10, CHEYNEY 7
Hey, somebody had to win, right? This was the undercard to the Clarion-Lock Haven game this week..
