Mr. Touchdown
He has been a big reason why LIU Post wins and loses games. Malik Pierre has been on fire the past three weeks and he is a big reason that the Pioneers have a three-game winning streak. His latest effort was on display in Post's 41-14 victory over Pace last Saturday.
Entering the bye week, Pierre had four rushing touchdowns and one receiving. Since the bye week, he has taken up a residence in the end zone.
Pierre has seven rushing touchdowns, two receiving touchdowns and two kickoff returns for scores. That is 11 touchdowns in three games and those are season stats for some players, not a three week stretch.
He is the reigning Player of the Week for torching the American International defense and then did the same exact thing to Pace. He has two rushing scores and then added two receiving touchdowns to continue this unbelievable stretch.
Post finishes the season with Merrimack and St. Anselm. Those defenses will need to find a way to slow down Pierre but recent history points to more trips in the end zone.
Mr. Automatic
He has been the best kicker in the league this year and might go down as the best kicker that the NE-10 has ever seen. Assumption kicker Cole Tracy was again a big part of Assumption's 68-0 victory over Stonehill.
Tracy was four for four in field goals and they were from impressive lengths. It started with a career and NE-10 record long 53 yards. It got a little easier on the next kick from 27 yards out.
But then he drilled kicks from 48 and 49 yards away. He is an incredible 16 for 17 this year in field goal attempts. His lone miss was from 52 yards against Merrimack. He is perfect in extra points, going 48 for 48.
So, he has stepped on the field 64 times and was successful 63 of those kicks. That is just next level for any kicker at any level. This also includes a game winning kick in the first game of the season at Kutztown. He drilled a 24-yard kick with 18 seconds left to open the season.
His career has been very impressive. He is now 57 for 72 in field goals with several over 50 yards. He is 150 for 155 in extra points and has a NE-10 record 321 points.
Assumption head coach Bob Chesney knows that if his offense stalls anywhere inside the 35-yard line, he will call upon Tracy and the odds are in his favor.
Mr. Excitement Again
Deonte Harris did it again. He returned a punt for a touchdown for Assumption in their victory over Stonehill. That is his fifth punt return of the season which is a NE-10 record.
He also ties the NCAA Division II mark held by James Rooths of Shepherd. He had five punt return touchdowns in a season back in 1998. Rooths also holds the record for career returns with 10 from 1997-2000 and returned 59 total punts in his career. That was good for a 17% chance for a touchdown each punt he returned.
Harris now has seven career punt returns for touchdowns and if teams continue to kick to him, he could break the record before the end of the season. If not, he has a shot at it next year during his senior campaign. He has 37 punt returns and his percentage is slightly higher than Rooths at 19%.
Harris will get his next chance at American International.
NE-10 Champs
It is the end of October and we have a champion for the NE-10. With Assumption's 68-0 victory over Stonehill, the Greyhounds win the regular title for the second time in the past three years.
It has been a very impressive season for Assumption and we still have two regular season games left and then the playoffs. They have crushed all comers and have left nothing to chance.
They are averaging 50 points per game in the NE-10 and have beaten all opponents by at least 17 points. In fact, the closest game in the league was a 25-8 victory over Southern Connecticut. Other than that, they have beaten teams by nearly 40 points and just walked over the league this year.
LIU Post scored 20 points and that is their worst defensive output this year. They have two shutouts and two other games in which they allowed just single digit points.
Assumption finishes the regular season with a trip to American International and a home finale against Bentley. If they win those two games, they should host at least one playoff game and then the fun begins as they try to make a deep run.
One Point
New Haven has played four home games this year and all of those games have been decided by one point. Yes, you heard me right, one point.
It started in September when LIU Post came to town. The Pioneers escaped with a 35-34 victory after a late field goal was missed by the Chargers.
Then several weeks later, Pace was the opponent and they missed an extra point and that was the difference in a New Haven 21-20 victory. The Setters also had a field goal try late that was missed.
And then a couple of weeks ago, Stonehill scored late but New Haven answered with a touchdown to win the game 23-22. Fast forward to last Saturday and the Chargers' 20-19 victory over American Intenrational.
The Yellow Jackets drive the field and score with over two minutes to play to take a 19-14 advantage. Then New Haven hits on a big play from Ajee Patterson to Devon Martin to get the ball to the one yard line.
Patterson finishes the drive with a one yard touchdown plunge and the Chargers win 20-19. Four games played at DellaCamera Stadium this year and the Chargers were 3-1 with a margin of victory of a total of three points.
New Haven will hit the road next week to Bentley before they close out the season at home against Merrimack.
Someone will say that game will be decided by a single point. I just feel it.
Run RightNew Stadium Glee
Merrimack is undefeated in the new Warrior Stadium after winning 41-3 last Saturday. The latest victim was St. Anselm as the Warriors used a balanced attack to win their third game of the season.
Derrick Villard had 152 yards on the ground and found the end zone twice. CJ Scarpa had 238 yards through the air in connecting with eight different receivers. Three of them caught touchdown passes and the Merrimack defense yielded a mere 155 yards of offense.
Merrimack hits the road over the final two weeks of the season as they play at LIU Post this weekend and New Haven to close out the season.
