Record Breaking
LIU Post quarterback Yianni Gavalas became the all-time NE-10 career leader in passing yards on Saturday. The Pioneers defeated Merrimack 49-7 behind the arm of Gavalas once again. It is the fourth straight win for Post as they keep their playoff hopes alive.
He threw for 363 yards in the game and now has 2,831 passing yards on the season. Gavalas now has 11,138 yards for his career surpassing Bentley's Marc Eddy previous top mark of 11,035. Eddy holds most of the passing records for the NE-10 as he completely dominated the league from 2001-2004 for the Falcons.
Gavalas also tossed five touchdown passes, giving him 34 for the season and 86 for his career. He also ran in another touchdown as he has been completely unstoppable in the second half of the season.
Gavalas is a fifth-year player in the league as he spent 2013-2016 playing for St. Anselm and amassing 8,307 yards during his time with the Hawks. He might have been the best quarterback to wear the St. Anselm uniform and he has taken it up a notch since he arrived as a graduate student at LIU Post.
As we talked about earlier in the season, he is from the Long Island area and a chance to play closer to home obviously has helped him excel. Not to mention playing with the talent that Post is able to recruit.
Post is now 7-2, 6-2 in the NE-10 and will make a trip to St. Anselm to close out the regular season.
Record Breaking, Part II
Andrew Jamiel continues to rewrite the Stonehill record books and now etches his name in the NE-10 one. During the Skyhawks' 56-30 victory over Pace, Jamiel hauled in 18 passes for 294 yards and five scores.
The 294 yards tops the previous best of Merrimack's Isiaiah Voegel at 269. He also tied the school and league record with five touchdown passes in a single game. He was one short of the league record of 19 receptions in a single game.
He also helped his quarterback set a school record. Matt Foltz became the first Stonehill passer to top 7,0000 yards for a career and tie a school record with six touchdown passes in a game. He topped the previous mark of Logan Meyer who was the starter prior to Foltz's arrival in Easton.
The signal caller also become the first quarterback to top the 2,000 yard mark in three consecutive seasons for the Skyhawks and has a shot at becoming the all-time touchdown pass leader as he is three short of Meyer.
The Skyhawks avenged the loss to Assumption last week and took it out on the Pace secondary. They threw the ball early and often and the Setters had no chance.
Stonehill will close out the season hosting American International next weekend.
Undefeated
Assumption stayed perfect on the season with a 40-3 victory over American International last Saturday. It was again a well-rounded victory as all three phases of the game contributed to the victory.
Brendan Tobey subbed for the injured Marc Monks and the offense did not miss a beat. One glaring stat of the game was time of possession.
The Yellow Jackets held the ball for 42:42 but were only able to generate 174 yards of total offense. That is compared to 25:26 for Assumption and 486 yards of total offense. Both teams ran a similar amount of plays but the Greyhounds averaged more than four yards more per play than American International.
Ashton Grant also became the all-time leader in receiving yards for Assumption as he hauled in six passes for 130 yards. He now has 3,017 over his brilliant career and topped the previous record held by David Canney.
Assumption will close out the regular season next weekend as they host Bentley.
Freshman Connection
Speaking of Bentley, they snapped a two-game losing streak as they defeated New Haven 27-24 in overtime. On Senior Day for the Falcons, it was once again the underclassmen that stepped up in the victory.
Freshman quarterback Stephen Sturm has been outstanding in his three starts this year as he has completed at least 75% of his passes. His favorite target has been fellow classmate Austin Ryan as the two hooked up eight times including another touchdown. Ryan now has 12 touchdowns this year which puts him in a three-way tie for league best. He leads the league with 950 receiving yards.
After Martin Bannerman, Jr. tied the game at 24 with a touchdown run in the fourth quarter, it was sophomore Grant Buchanan that won the game for the Falcons.
The Bentley defense held New Haven to four and out on the first series of overtime. Then the sophomore Buchanan drilled a career long 39-yard field goal to send the Falcon faithful home happy with the victory.
It ended a tough two game streak that saw Bentley loss in overtime at Stonehill and drop their last home game to Southern Connecticut. Both times the defense yielded over 40 points in the losses but they improved this week holding New Haven to a mere 24 points.
Bentley will close out the season next weekend at Assumption.
Quarterback Show
Southern Connecticut topped St. Anselm 35-28 but it was the quarterbacks that were the center of attention in the game.
Owl quarterback Ray Catapano run for 86 yards including a pair of scores and threw for 196 yards with a touchdown.
Hawk quarterback Eric Fairweather was not to be undone. He ran for 160 yards, three scores including an 82 yarder in the second quarter. He also tossed 127 yards and a score.
It was the third consecutive win for Southern Connecticut as they have turned things around lately. It was a disappointing first half of the season for the Owls but they have a shot at a 5-5 record and 5-4 league record if they can top Pace in the regular season finale.
St. Anselm hosts LIU Post this weekend and the Owls host the afore mentioned Pace Setters.
