Northern Michigan 24, Wisconsin-LaCrosse 6

The Wildcat defense was solid, holding the Eagles below 200 total yards on the day. Prince Young tallied 102 yards on the ground to go along with three TD's, and Northern notched one in the win column. Not exactly a blow-out which might have been the expectation against a D3 opponent...but remember, there essentially isn't any D2 ball in Wisconsin, so a lot of kids with a higher skill/talent level often wind up playing for WIAC schools such as LaCrosse. Not making excuses, but rather making sure that we keep this NMU win a bit more in perspective.

Northwood 28, Walsh 16

Walsh had more first downs and more total offense in this one, but The Woodies made some big plays in other areas to notch the win. Northwood's defense notched five sacks which helped stall Cavalier drives. More importantly, the Timberwolf special teams had 132 more return yards which not only provided major field position advantages that NU cashed-in on, but also netted one of NU's scores on a Cameron Jackson kick-off return. It was one of two Jackson TD's on the day, and Jordan Jonker also tallied a pair of scores.

Michigan Tech 51, Tiffin 15

Tyler Scarlett got his sophomore campaign off to a solid start by hitting on 15 of 23 for 276 yards a pair of TD's. The Husky defense was solid as well, generating three turnovers and keeping the Dragons in check for most of the afternoon. Tiffin QB James Capello couldn't carry his team to a win, but he did register a pair of scoring tosses for the second straight week.

Saginaw Valley 37, Malone 14

Seven different players carried the ball, and seven different players caught passes for Saginaw Valley as they used a balanced attack to easily handle their first roadie to Fawcett Stadium in Canton. Jon Jennings threw a pair of TD passes to lead the Cards who were in control throughout.

Hillsdale 38, Ohio Dominican 20

This game was 38-0 late in the third before the Chargers flooded the field with the two's and three's. Joe Glendening led the Hillsdale offense with 180 yards and three TD's on the ground, and the Charger pass defense that was shaky a week ago registered four interceptions of ODU QB Mark Miller.

Ferris State 49, Lake Erie 21

If the Bulldogs appeared a tad sluggish a week ago on offense, those kinks seem to have been worked out as they registered 665 yards against The Storm. Seven different Bulldogs found the end zone on the evening, and they weren't slowed down in the least after starting QB Jason VanderLaan got dinged. Taylor Masiewicz simply entered the game in relief, and proceeded to fire three TD passes on his way to 9 of 12 for 145 yards.

Grand Valley 83, Notre Dame 46

I haven't been drinking and I'm not having basketball season visions or flashbacks. Real score, folks. So much blasted offense, I'm not even going to bother trying to tell you who did well because they pretty much all did. Feel free to peruse the box score for your fun/enjoyment. Laker fans have to be scratching their heads over their inability to slow down a team that was 5-6 a year ago and lost four straight to close the season. I'm with them because I haven't seen anything like this in, well, forever. The big problem for the Falcons is that their defense was even worse, although that was aided by a GV offense that executed at a pretty high level. In the end, GV has some things to figure out defensively if they want to be playing into December, and the GLIAC South better be watching a whole bunch of tape and fast because these Falcons can move the ball and aren't intimidated by much.

Ashland 7, Wayne State 0

Ashland made big plays defensively time and again in this one as they held the Warriors to a meager 162 yards of total offense, and stuffed a pair four quarter scoring chances to snag the win. Despite moving the ball slightly better, Ashland wasn't exactly a juggernaut on offense...their lone scoring drive was three plays for seven yards after a Wayne turnover, and their deepest penetration otherwise was the Wayne 17. That said, Taylor Housewright didn't make any mistakes and the Eagles were able to grind things out. For Ashland, their defense has played well two weeks in a row and has to be something they are happy about. For Wayne, we wondered how the losses of so many major components of last year's squad would impact them...there are still nine games to be played so the jury is still out, but the early returns aren't promising.
