After seeing the VSU round 2 post game presser I thought I'd send a shout out to both men. No doubt Herb knows Coaching talent and I must say that Coach Jack's dissatisfaction with a comfortable win is refreshing. Herb clearly got across that our standard is NC or nothing.
Despite our success it seemed that Valdosta had become a launching pad for coaches who wanted to go to D1 at any cost. After the Goff era, giving up 38 to UWF and 58 to Ferris, we needed a coach that could fill our two biggest needs. We needed a coach that is defensive minded and that could instill toughness. Secondly we needed a coach that will stick around.
Why would I expect Coach SUE to stick around when he hasn't spent more than two years anywhere else? I wish there were an easy way to say this but simply, 1. because he's black and 2. because VSU (as far as I know) has never fired a coach. Coach knows that statistically, black coaches are the last hired and first fired so when you land a prime job like the Blazer job you don't give it up for a spot on someone's staff.
Herb knew he wouldn't be around so he gave us SUE. Coach Jackson's going to have a pair of NC's before he's even on anyone's radar and if I were he, I would leave only for a head coaching job at the next level. Leaving to be a part of someone's staff is a huge risk and one that need not be taken, not from where he's sitting - Head Coach of the best NCAA D2 program.
The young one's probably won't get my Sue reference but this message is meant only for those who do :-)
