  • GSC Baseball Tournament

Just curious what everyone thinks of the format. For any who don't know, the GSC uses the pool format with the winners of each pool advancing to the championship game. The benefit to the pool format is that it allows you to guarantee a minimum number of games for each team. The down side is that some of the games are often meaningless.

First let me acknowledge that any game involving a team fighting for an at-large birth in the regional tournament is not meaningless. However, the purpose of the conference tournament is grant the automatic qualifier to the regional and 3 of the 4 games yesterday were meaningless for that purpose.

Pool A had two 0-2 teams (West Alabama & North Alabama) playing in the first game of the day and two 2-0 teams (Delta State & Mississippi College) playing the only game that mattered in Game 4.

Pool B had two 1-1 teams (West Florida & Montevallo) playing in Game 2 but each had lost to Lee (2-0) playing West Georgia (0-2) in Game 3. Lee had already advanced to the championship game before either game was played.

I hope the MIAA never goes to this format. This is college baseball and there is no need for meaningless "guarantee" games in a post season tournament.
