As I'm still working to recover from that amazing game we witnessed last weekend at Arrowhead Stadium, time for another edition of High 5 rolls around.
With five games under our belts, I think it's about time we start looking at more than wins and losses. Now, I have always tried to consider more than JUST winning percentages, but it can be tough to take things like competition level and what who did against what into account when dealing with a small sample size.
But I think the teams in the MIAA are starting to develop some trends that we're seeing over and over and help me see through W-L.
We start this week's High 5 with our first big debate. Who should be first? Do you go AFCA-style, putting Washburn ahead of Northwest Missouri ahead of Pitt State? Or do we stick with the D2Football.com pollsters, putting Pitt State ahead of Northwest Missouri ahead of Washburn?
Here's how I figure it.
1. Pittsburg State (5-0) - You have to look at the competition here. Their win over Northwest surely trumps Washburn's win over Missouri Western. And while I can emphasize with the pollsters who didn't want to move Pitt ahead of Northwest solely because of their previous positions, I'm not worried about that in this ranking. For you Pitt State fans begging me to stay off your bandwagon, don't worry. I'm still not completely sold, but for now, judging what they've done, they're the best team in this conference.
2. Washburn (5-0) - I could see Northwest Missouri in this position, but even though Washburn has had some tough times getting past some teams they should have cruised against, I really do like what the 'Bods are throwing out there. Dane Simoneau seems to have a little bit of a problem getting going in games, but once he's feeling it, there's not a better quarterback in the conference.
3. Northwest Missouri (4-1) - The Bearcats will be okay, but their collapse was on the borderline of epic. Particularly looking at the penalties, this team did not look like a national title contender in the second half of the game. Can they rebound against Central Missouri? That will be the true test, as they have not gone into a conference game coming off a loss in quite a while.
4. Missouri Western (3-2) - I don't love the Griffons this year. I'm not gonna lie. I especially don't love Travis Partridge as a quarterback. But besides from Week 1, even when he doesn't play great, he's not playing awful. His performance on the ground last week was impressive. And Missouri Western's defensive line, namely David Bass, is sill worthy of instilling some fear in your heart.
5. Central Missouri (4-1) - It sure is fun to watch Tommy Corwin and Jamar Howard hook up for touchdowns, isn't it? But the Mules need to establish someone as a consistent running threat before I can take them seriously. Guys like Zac Dickey and Travis Partridge, who don't have the best passing games, can still hurt you with another aspect of their game, but if your running backs aren't productive enough to get you by, there's not a whole lot of alternative there. It's going to get ugly in Warrensburg if some consistency doesn't hit their offensive backfield, and soon.

And you're not a big Travis Partridge fan? Really? I hadn't picked up on that. :bulgy-eyes:
