Looks like I didn't pick too bad a week to go on vacation after all. While miracles were happening all over Division II, Showdown Saturday in the MIAA ended up not all that interesting.
Sure, we learned a little bit about ourselves and our current and future family members, but it wasn't the day full of excitement I think we all wanted.
Instead of focusing on the MIAA in this post, I wanna take a minute to take you around the league, beginning in, of all places, East Stroudsburg, Pa., where 1-6 ESU hosted 2-5 Millersville at a game my dad, brother and I were able to attend.
As I said last week when I mentioned I was going to this game, it doesn't offer much in hype or meaningfulness, but it ended up being well worth a trip up into the Poconos.
Not only did I get a chance to see the new "Dean" of Division II coaches, ESU's Denny Douds, set the new benchmark for games coached at this level, I also got to take a look at the nation's leading passer, Stroudsburg's Ray Wagner.
Wagner was unimpressive at best, throwing three interceptions that led to two Millersville touchdowns and ended up leaving the game after taking a late hit on a play before he threw a touchdown pass.
But the game was great. ESU broke a tie with a late FG, and Millersville, who pretty much hadn't moved the ball all game and had scored three touchdowns on short drives after interceptions (the 3rd TD coming off an INT from ESU's backup) stormed down the field and scored the winning TD with just 17 seconds to play.
While this game hails in comparison to some others I'm about to mention, it is just a small testament to the greatness of college football, particularly at the D2 level.
Other interesting notes from around the league:
#1 Delta State scored a touchdown with 39 seconds left to knock off #10 Valdosta. The TD drive went 92 yards in 6:49 and included three fourth-down conversions.
#2 Abilene Christian got 70 points hung on them by #13 Midwestern State in a 70-28 defeat. That's the most points ACU has ever given up in the regular season and the most yards (740) Midwestern State has ever amassed in a single game.
#3 Bloomsburg fell down at West Chester 35-0 early in the second quarter before turning the jets on and coming back to win 52-45. The comeback is a new Division II record and ties an all-division record for biggest comeback.
This is just a small piece of the kind of stuff that happened last week, and seems to be happening every week in D2 these days.
For my MIAA faithful, I'll get into the MIAA games later this week and have a new High 5 for you, plus regional rankings make their 2011 debut this week, but for now, I needed to take a minute to revel in what happens nationally each and every week.

#1Guest commented10-23-2011, 11:39 AMEditing a commentJust had to give you a "complement"! And I don't usually do that. Your column has improved. When you leave out the nasty remarks and just state the "facts" no matter how they are, it is more interesting to read. Don't care who's bandwagon you "may" be on or not, just like reading the facts WITHOUT "personal" remarks about players on any team. Decent job the last three blogs.
