Wayne State was leading 14-13 in the second quarter. Warrior RB Toney Davis was heating up, having just ripped off his second 40+ run of the game and Wayne had a third and goal from the five-yard line.
But a Micky Mohner pass to the corner of the end zone was caught out of bounds, forcing a short field goal attempt and the play that would turn the tides of the game and lead to Pittsburg State's second Division II national championship game victory, a 35-21 win over everybody's favorite Cinderalla team.
Paul Robinson, who had earlier picked off a Mohner pass and would lend up sealing the game with a late INT, blocked the field goal try and Aries Herrion picked it up on a bounce and ran 80 yards into the end zone, giving the Gorillas a 20-14 lead.
For the second straight game, Pitt used a big second quarter to pull away from a close game and held off late charges (this week's more fierce than last's).
Then in the third quarter, Superman, also known as Nate Dreiling, blocked a Wayne State punt, and though Pitt wasn't able to convert it into points, it helped keep momentum on their side as Wayne was trying to claw back into the game.
While a couple big special teams play loomed large in the victory, the first 'special play' of the game came for the Warriors. Wayne State running back Josh Renel, who would later leave the game with a leg injury and not return, took the opening kick 93 yards for a touchdown.
From there, it got worse for Pitt, when Zac Dickey threw an interception on their first drive of the game.
But Wayne QB Micky Mohner turned around and threw it right back to Pitt. A personal found on Wayne put the ball at the 22, and two plays later, Pitt was in the end zone.
Wayne State would end their following two drives on turnovers, but Pitt could only get another three points out of it.
On the heels of Davis, Wayne almost took control of the game in the second quarter, but the blocked FG was a huge turnaround.
Pitt went into halftime with the 27-14 lead. Neither team scored in the third quarter.
Wayne State tried to make it interesting in the fourth quarter when Davis scored his second one-yard touchdown of the game, but up 6 with about five minutes to play, Pittsburg State offensive coordinator wasn't content with playing ball control offense.
After a 17-yard run on first down by RB Jason Spradling, Rampey called a deep down-the-middle route to WR Andrew Castaneda that went for 53 yards to the Wayne State 4-yard line that set up a Spradling touchdown run to ice the game.
It was quite a ball game. Both teams played great and not-so-great at times. Congratulations to the Gorillas! It's been a great season! And to Wayne State, it was a great run, and you should be proud of yourselves, but I'm certainly not upset it's ended with a loss!
Look for more on this game much later tonight or tomorrow right here on my blog. But for now, it's a family Christmas awaiting me! Two celebrations in one day!

Congrats go to Pitt and their coaches. they stuck with Dickey and it paid off. Next year should be interesting with all the new schools. thank goodness Zuerlein graduated. Enjoy your time in the limelight Pitt.
