The short answer to the question above is no. But bear with me a moment here. It might actually put them in really good shape to put a lock on at least a share of a conference crown beforewe even hit the last week of the regular season.
I discussed in my High 5 blog yesterday that there's 7 teams in this conference worthy of discussion at this point in the season.
And while the other 6 (Pitt State, Emporia State, Missouri Western, Northwest Missouri, Lindenwood and Washburn) go head-to-head against each other 11 times in the last 5 weeks of the season, Central Missouri is out of the water.
They close the season vs UCO, at NSU, vs UNK, at Fort Hays and with a bye in the final week of 2012. Sure, anything can happen, but on most anybody's paper, that's 4 easy wins.
So, if Central Missouri pulls off what would be a HUGE upset in Pittsburg on Saturday, then it's just up to the rest of the league to knock each other around enough. Specifically, unbeaten Emporia and Western would both have to go down.
They have each other on the schedule, so that takes care of one of them; Both still have Northwest and Washburn on their schedules, Emporia plays Lindenwood and Western plays Pitt State.
You'd have to think if anybody's going to go unbeaten this year in conference play, it's going to be Pittsburg, so if they lose Saturday, isn't the Mules' road to at least a share of their first conference crown since 2003 paved in baked goods?
The answer lies in your response to these 2 questions. (Remember, this is all predicated on the notion that Central upsets Pitt Saturday.)
Is Central Missouri going to lose to UCO, NSU, UNK or Hays? And will either Missouri Western or Emporia finish the season undefeated?
If your answer to both questions is no, then ladies and gentlemen, by the final week of the season, when the Mules get to sit back and watch as the rest of the conference finishes 2012, they might already be at least co-conference champions.
What do you think? Is it even a discussion? Can Central pull the upset in the Jungle?
