Anthony Abenoja threw 3 costly interceptions - the first was returned 20 yards for a game-tying TD in the 2nd quarter - but his 428 yards and 3 TDs were just enough for No. 5 Pittsburg State in a 38-31 victory on Senior Day in The Jungle.
Marquise Cushon caught 2 long TD grabs, including a 75-yarder on the first play of the game, and ended the day with 221 receiving yards. Fellow Pitt WR Gavin Lutman added 122 yards.
Central Missouri held a 31-28 4th-quarter lead and wasn't doing much offensively when, of all things, a series of Gorilla 3-and-outs changed things.
UCM forced a punt after the first 3-and-out, but it was muffed and Pitt recovered. PSU went 3-and-out again, but K Connor Frizzell nailed a 40-yard FG to tie the game.
The Gorillas forced a quick punt and then went 80 yards on 7 plays for the deciding score with just over 2 minutes to play. Central had a chance to force at least a tie, but QB Hayden Hawk was sacked on 2nd, 3rd and 4th downs, ending any chance for the Mules.
Hawk ended the day 14 of 32 for just 119 yards. He didn't throw a TD or an INT. Mules RB LaVance Taylor did a good job of keeping UCM in the game. He carried the ball 23 times for 190 yards and 2 TDs, adding another 3 catches for 26 yards.
More from Super Region 3
Also in the MIAA Saturday, Northwest Missouri used 21 second-quarter points to pull away from Emporia State, holding on for a convincing 42-14 victory.
Minnesota State, ranked No. 1 in the country and in SR3, won 49-0 at Wayne State (Neb.).
Ouchita Baptist, ranked No. 21 in the country and 2 in SR3, won 47-10 at Arkansas Monticello.
Minnesota Duluth, ranked No. 2 in the country and 3 in SR3, won 53-35 vs Mary.
Pitt and Northwest are ranked No. 4 and 5 in SR3.
Azusa Pacific, ranked No. 19 in the country and 6 in SR3, won 21-6 at Simon Fraser.
Sioux Falls, ranked No. 20 in the country and 7 in SR3, won 45-21 vs Mary.
So not much has changed. Northwest and Pitt should stick right where they are, and would still meet each other in the first round of the playoffs in things don't change next week as well.
More on today's action from the MIAA and the rest of Super Region 3 coming later.
