Gosh, time flies. I recall counting down to the Labor Day weekend with my summer previews and here we are in Week 3 already! Most of the Gulf South Conference will be playing a slate of non-conference or even non-divisional games, while two teams are idle this week.
The most important game of the week is West Alabama and Miles, as it is the only in-region game. The other two D2 matchups to watch will be West Georgia hosting CIAA opponent Fayetteville State and Delta State hosting Kentucky Wesleyan, a D2 Independent. Florida Tech, Mississippi College and Shorter all play schools from other divisions, while North Alabama and Valdosta State have the week off.
Shorter (0-1) at Kennesaw St. (2-0; FCS) @ 1 PM EST
My Pick: Owls 30-7
Fayetteville State (0-2) at #2 West Georgia (2-0) @ 2 PM EST
West Georgia had a good showing last week against Miles. The Wolves offense scored 33 points while racking up 457 total yards and 26 first downs. Freshman running back Aares McCall had is second consecutive game with over 100 yards rushing and he is averaging 136.5 all-purpose yards. The UWG defense did well, also, holding the Golden Bears to 7 points and 215 total yards of offense.
Fayetteville State has lost their first two games, the most recent one being a loss at UNC-Pembroke last week. The Bronchos offense was held to 174 total yards and was only 3-of-14 on third down attempts. Another negative for FSU was being flagged 12 times for 112 yards against the Braves.
The Wolves are going to have no trouble with the Bronchos at home this Saturday.
My Pick: Wolves 38-3
West Alabama (2-0) at Miles (0-2) @ 4 PM CST
UWA had an unimpressive first half last week as they trailed NAIA Cumberland 8-7 at halftime. Yet, the Tigers exploded for 342 yards and four touchdowns in the second half to put the game away easily. The offense totaled 401 yards in the contest and had 16 first downs, but was only 8-for-18 on third down attempts. It was the defense that highlighted the victory as 23 different Tigers recorded tackles.
Poor Miles will probably not want to schedule any GSC opponents in future years, especially not three-in-a-row. The Golden Bears have lost their first two games by a combined score of 67-24 against UNA and UWG. They only produced 215 yards of total offense last week in Carrollton.
This game could get interesting, especially being first game on the Miles campus this season, but I feel West Alabama will prevail in this matchup.
My Pick: Tigers 24-10
Kentucky Wesleyan (0-2) at #8 Delta State (2-0) @ 6 PM CST
Warner (2-1; NAIA) at Florida Tech (0-2) @ 7 PM EST
My Pick: Panthers 24-7
Belhaven (0-2; D3) at Mississippi College (1-1) @ 7 PM CST
My Pick: Choctaws 27-14

#2TheBraveWolf commented09-18-2015, 09:26 AMEditing a commentI too thought Shorter might be able to take KSU, but you are right this will probably be another win for KSU. West Georgia had to fill this date as their opponent dropped out, so I was hoping that KSU and WG would have played. I guess KSU would have had a more difficult time matching up against a strong DII team like WG. Taking a licking at home against a team in their backyard would have not gone over well with the KSU backers. Also WG was looking for another home game....

#3Wolf King commented09-18-2015, 08:31 PMEditing a commentKSU didn't want any part of the Wolves. Shorter doesn't have the horses to run with these fellas.
