The opening weekend of college football is behind us in 2016 and most of the conference is looking forward to the second week of play. I was perfect in my victory predictions last week, but way off on several of the point spreads.
We have a mix of games this week with one team playing an FCS school, two playing in-region D2 games, and two playing out-of-region matchups, along with one GSC contest. Valdosta State and North Alabama are open this week heading into their head-to-head battle in Week 3.
Shorter @ Mars Hill (1 PM EST)
My pick: Lions by 17
#2 West Georgia @ Miles (4 PM CST)
West Georgia opened up the year with a quality win over Catawba, mainly due to their dominant defensive unit. The outcome was never really in question but it took until the 4th Quarter for the Wolves offense to pad the score and put the game away. Senior wide receiver Qa Walker had his third straight game with over 100 receiving yards after tallying 116 and a touchdown. This week they will face off against the Miles Golden Bears, from the SIAC, who came from 21 points down and overcame four turnovers to beat Fort Valley State by 13 last week. UWG has handled Miles easily in the past two seasons and I expect nothing less this go around.
My pick: Wolves by 28
#16 Texas A&M-Commerce @ Delta State (6 PM CST)
Both of these teams basically had scrimmage games the opening week of play. DSU was in control of Kentucky Wesleyan from the kickoff by scoring two touchdowns on their first two plays from scrimmage (one rushing, one passing) and barely played any of their starters in the second half while TAMCU, a member of the Lone Star Conference, blew out the University of Faith. It will be nice to see what these squads do when faced with actual competition. This game was a barnburner in Texas last year and I predict another one in Cleveland this weekend.
My pick: Statesmen by 3
West Alabama @ Stephen F. Austin (6 PM CST)
My pick: Lumberjacks by 17
Missouri S&T @ West Florida (6 PM CST)
My pick: Argonauts by 7
Mississippi College @ Florida Tech (7 PM EST)
My pick: Panthers by 24
