Here are a few things to keep an eye on this week in Gulf South Conference gridiron action.

Picking Samford big over UWA?
My pick: Bulldogs 31, Tigers 24

Is Delta State back?

Not sure yet. Last weekend, the Statesmen handled the Tarleton Texans pretty well on both sides of the ball. The defense was much improved, holding them to only a field goal for the first three quarters, while the offense looked good with new starting quarterback Breck Ruddick (transfer from Missouri State) at the helm. This week, DSU welcomes in-region opponent Chowan to town from the CIAA. The game will be the first at Parker-McCool Stadium on the new turf and I expect much of the same as last week from Delta State if they can keep the penalty yardage below 100. The Hawks had over 450 yards of offense last week in their loss to Fayetteville State (which was 200 more than the Broncos) but I think playing an LSC opponent last week will have Delta ready to shut them down.

My pick: Statesmen 28, Hawks 14
