There was less learned about the Gulf South Conference last week than the television series LOST ever told us about the island.

Delta State-North Alabama went into overtime. Valdosta State-West Alabama was decided by a point. And West Georgia beat a team nobody has ever heard of.

If UNA is the big you know what in the shower like I called them earlier in the week, then DSU is the one slightly smaller...but is somehow nailing the hottest chick around. For whatever reason the Lions just don't know how to use this magnificent thing of theirs. But the Statesmen are that guy that knows how to utilize what he's been given.

The Gulf South Conference can still tout having the number one team in the country after last week. Delta State's overtime victory over rival North Alabama lived up to the billing. Whenever you get the elites of this conference together, they tend to put on a show worth watching.

Even though they don't play this week, North Alabama has once again stolen the limelight. With DSU the unanimous top team in the land according to all polls it seems obvious where UNA should be. Abilene Christian is ranked third. UNA lost to #1 DSU and beat #3 ACU. So obviously they should be ranked fifth?

I know people are confused and upset about this...but it doesn't matter. It's my job to sit here and write about these polls and how much they matter, but they don't. For those that don't know, D II football relies on regional rankings that are calculated based on several criteria. Wherever you are ranked in one of the many national polls that are voted on my people who watch three percent of D II football games all year is as meaningless as a court order to Lindsey Lohan.

Most of the Top 25 don't share common opponents making it really ridiculous for us to truly figure out where each team should go. But then again, that makes the dilemma of where to rank UNA even more ridiculous. We know who they beat, we know who they lost to and we know where each of those teams are ranked.

I still believe UNA wins the National Championship. They got a loss out of the way and we all know how tough it is to take down a GSC team twice in one year. I like the fire this will light for the Lions.

But they don't play this week, giving us just two games to look at. One as boring as an Amish porno and the other a classic battle; with more history than The Situation and Snooki. Do you think she cheated on Jionni with him?

Thursday 7 pm West Alabama at West Georgia

Matt Willis is special. Not in a short bus kind of way. In a Harlon Hill representative kind of way.

He's the top rusher in the conference and runs at will against any and every kind of defense. He's still averaging a filthy 6.3 yards per carry after a 33 touch 219 yard one touchdown performance against Valdosta State. This week he takes on the GSC's worst rush defense in Carrollton, Georgia...get the white out ready for the record books.

So much was made of what was lost at UWA with Deon Williams and Bobby Wallace gone. But what is there is some of the best football players this conference has. Gerald Worsham has continued to dominate despite having less experience throwing him the ball. But the story of this team is the defense.

The Tigers have put together a core of defenders that play the game the right way. They play smart, hard, fast, sideline-to-sideline and are opportunistic. Otha Foster leads the GSC in interceptions while teammates Deon Lacey, Gabe Poe and Shontral Ford are fourth, sixth and ninth respectively in tackles.

This team is stacked and isn't getting the love they deserve. If they do not make the playoffs it will be because of ignorance of decision makers, not because they weren't good enough.

West Alabama is about to take its frustration out on UWG. UWG can't stop average rushing attacks and they have an elite one in front of them this week. They would have lost to a team most people didn't know existed a week ago had it not been for some incredible kicking by Davis Brackett.

That's two game UWG has won this year because of out of this world special teams performances. You can do that against nothings from nowhere, but not UWA.

Opponents are converting on third down against the Wolves more than any other team in the conference, while UWG is ranked last on the offensive side of the category as well.

Emmanuel Taylor gets sacked too much to trust against a good GSC defense. He also isn't efficient enough. I don't see how West Georgia amasses 250 yards of total offense in this game.

The Tigers are about to tell the world that they're a top 25 team.

I wish there was more to say, but there isn't.

The Felines are going to crush the canines.

Prediction: West Alabama over West Georgia 44-17

Saturday 8pm Valdosta State at Delta State

Like I said earlier in this piece, when the elites of the GSC get together we always get dramatic battles. These two teams especially know how to do that. But VSU always seems to be on the losing end of this match up of late. Whoever wins this year, will be the team that wins on the line of scrimmage.

Delta State is the GSC's best at getting to the quarterback. They lead the conference with 26 sacks so far this year.

Valdosta State has allowed just five sacks this year, making them the best protected team in the GSC.

This is the chess match to watch. Whoever wins this battle will win this game.

VSU's offensive line vs. DSU's defense line is a wash. They are both equally great.

It's on the other side of the ball that this game will be decided.

The Blazers are second in the GSC with 15 sacks this season while the Delta State is tied for most sacks allowed. Does DSU have an answer for the GSC's top pass rusher Lawrence Virgil? Because his play hasn't just led to his great numbers, the secondary in Valdosta is also flourishing.

Matt Pierce and Ryan Smith each have three interceptions this season while the rest of the Blazer defense flocks to the ball just as well. VSU has seven players ranked in the top 25 in tackles. DSU has five, with three of them coming in at 21st, 22nd and 23rd. VSU has four in the top ten.

The Statesmen average 303.6 passing yards per game. Micah Davis leads the GSC in total offense and has tossed 16 touchdowns to 9 interceptions. This week he takes on a secondary that has played opportunistic defense all season.

But Davis is a senior. He's been to a National Championship game. Most of all he knows what it takes to win big, close games. He has DSU converting 43 percent of their third downs right now and throwing up 35 points per contest.

If the DSU defense vs. VSU's offense is a wash, because of Davis' leadership and experience the edge has to go to DSU.

The reason this will be a close game is because of three stats for Valdosta State. The lead the conference in red zone defense, red zone offense and punting.

They will hold teams down when they get into scoring distance. They will capitalize when they have a chance to score. And Jack Fulford will make crucial deep pinning kicks when necessary. Don't think David Dean will risk it on fourth and short when he has Fulford to pin DSU deep.

In these big games, you always defer to the experience.

But if there were ever a situation for DSU's playing with fire to catch up with them, it'd be this week. After the huge win last week, now the undeniable #1 team in the land; if they're going to lose it's now.

Or, instead of us waiting for them to lose these close games, maybe we should start acknowledging that they know how to get it done when it matters.

Prediction: Delta State over Valdosta State 31-27
