Everything can change in 72 days.

A reality star and basketball back ups marriage can crumble.

McRib's can miraculously return to McDonald's menus around the globe.

North Alabama can go from the most talented team in the land to a two loss program.

The Peach Basket can leave Valdosta, Georgia for the first time in five years.

But one thing remains; the Gulf South Conference is the most entertaining conference in Division II football.

How do things get better this week?

We're coming off a week where West Alabama and West Georgia upset North Alabama and Valdosta State (all in state rivals) respectively. These are events that don't occur every decade. See Saturday's blog for my initial thoughts from these events.

We all expected four GSC programs to make the playoffs this year. Did last week's events disturb that plan?

There is a chance that next weekend's North Alabama-Valdosta State match up could be for a playoff spot. I think they are both safe because of their strength of schedule with big wins over regional and national opponents. But you never know with these regional rankings. Remember Elizabeth City making it in 2006 over the tenth ranked team in the country.

As of right now the GSC would have four teams heading to the post season according to the latest regional rankings.

Here they are:

1. Delta State
2. Mars Hill
3. West Alabama
4. North Alabama
5. North Greenville
6. Valdosta State
7. Albany State
8. Morehouse
9. UNC-Pembroke
10. West Georgia

(Holy crap West Georgia is in the region rankings. The last time the Wolves were in the top ten of the region their current players were sprouting pubes)

As the season winds down and we look towards the playoffs, the team that should be feared the most in the GSC is West Alabama. The Tigers have the best player in the conference toting the ball 20 plus times a game in Matt Willis. UWA's offensive focal point is averaging an Earl Campbell-esque 5.6 yards per carry as the Will Hall's squad goes for 224 on the ground a game.

But it isn't just about running the ball. Everything this team does is perfect for the playoffs.

UWA protects the ball and forces turnovers (plus nine turnover margin).

They have a veteran defense that can knock the ball loose and pick the ball off in the air equally (11 fumbles gained, 10 interceptions).

True freshman quarterback Kyle Caldwell protects the football like it's his first Natural Light.

On third down or when they want to stretch the field, Caldwell has a superstar to sling it to in Gerald Worsham, who is still averaging 70 yards per game despite a different offensive philosophy this year.

Their win over UNA was not a fluke. They have now taken the Lions down two times in the last three seasons. The reason; talented in state freshmen like Kyle Caldwell are going to UWA and getting to play.

That talent used to go to UNA. Now the only way they'll end up there is if they go to an FBS school first. Then choose one of the following paths: failed classes, marijuana possession or DUI.

Those FBS rejects in Florence, Alabama (UNA) have become the Kim Kardashian of Division II football.

They are sexy, dynamic and look completely flawless on the surface.

But they both have extra agendas outside of football/marriage.

The marriage to Kris Humphries would never come before Kim Kardashian's money printing empire. She wouldn't even legally change her last name for marketing purposes.

UNA football players all have items on their mind other than winning a Division II national championship. These guys are looking to prove they are NFL, CFL or Arena League worthy first and foremost. A ring is completely secondary.

Like the Kardashian-Humphries union, a championship ring would be nice but it's not the number one goal.

But even more like Kim Kardashian's inability to find true love is North Alabama's big time success in the Terry Bowden era.

There is no reason for Kim Kardashian to not find fairy tale love. She is actually a sweet girl and has the physical look of a goddess.

North Alabama has twice as much talent as any Division II football program every year under Bowden. They should have at least one ring to show for it.

Instead, both are ring-less at the moment. But on the surface both look completely perfect in every single way.

Can Kim Kardashian and the Lions each get what they want out of life? Or will their lifestyle/philosophy continuously set them up for heartbreak?

There was another upset last week as the most illustrious trophy in sports today, the glorious, the divine, Peach Basket ended up in the hands of West Georgia once again.

Somehow this is just being mentioned in detail at this point of the blog. But the truth is. This was one of the most shocking wins I can remember in my time covering the GSC. UWG for many years was always an easy locked in loss in my picks.

But this year I have routinely said they are much improved and a team on the rise. I was proven right this week as the Wolves dropped in state rival VSU in Valdosta. That's the mark of a team that is really heading in the right direction. Can you do it on the road?

They'll probably lose the rest of their games, but UWG fans should smile from now until spring football. Because Darryl Dickey affirmed this season that he was the right man for the job.

As for Valdosta State, I have said all year they were a year away. They played over their head for a few weeks and had us all fooled but in the end made young mistakes. This team will put it together next year and beyond with some incredible possibilities on their plate. But as for 2011, they're no more than a one playoff win team. And that's a lot more than 90 percent of Division II football ever hopes for.

Saturday 5 pm West Alabama at Delta State

This is going to be as epic as the first McRib bite of the season.

Is this the week that playing with fire finally catches up with DSU?

I thought it could happen against Ouachita Baptist, Valdosta State and North Alabama this season. Why should West Alabama be any different?

Because they can control the clock better than all of those teams. The Tigers have a great shot to upset the number one team in the country this week.

If DSU goes up two scores early in the game, which they are capable of, UWA needs to decide how to come back.

The usually plan is to throw from behind. Chuck the ball around and make it a ball game again fast.

But with Willis pounding between the tackles for over five yards a carry, I say stay true to yourself.

The Tigers aren't a 30 throws-a-game team. If they try to be, they will get eaten alive as DSU leads the GSC with 14 interceptions and has returned three for touchdowns.

If the Statesmen take an early lead, UWA will need to stay true to themselves and continue to run the football. Take it a score at a time and play for one or two stops. But do not get into a shootout with Micah Davis.

Davis doesn't take the pedal off when he and DSU are leading. This guy will put you away faster than a Kappa Delta opens her legs.

Prediction: UWA over DSU 24-21

Saturday 5 pm West Georgia at North Alabama

I hope they enjoyed the party in Carrollton, Georgia this past week because it's about to come to an ugly end. North Alabama is as pissed as the guy in Mighty Ducks who grabbed the purse on the ground and realized there was only $1 and a lot of dog poop inside.

The Kim Kardashian of Division II football is on the prowl for revenge sex. It's going to be angry, it's going to be ugly and they are probably going to cry afterwards. If they are ever going to get over what just happened to them, it's by taking care of the sure thing in front of them this week.

West Georgia's Emmanuel Taylor only had to make big plays when it mattered last week. He threw for three touchdowns while only going for 102 total passing yards. That's because UWG went to their beastly stable of running backs and let James Kennebrew run wild for 145 yards on 27 carries.

They can try to establish the run against UNA all they want, but they don't have the thoroughbreds up front to clear space against this defense. Expect it to get ugly.

This is the laugher the Lions need at this point. They are still capable of winning the whole thing this year. Things must get righted now for that to happen.

Pick a name from this list to have a huge day: Mo Milliam, Lee Chapple, Antwan Ivey...hell choose them all. This will be a showcase.

If it isn't a complete blood bath, I'll write UNA out of winning my playoff bracket in the first round on Monday.

UNA, please remember to wear a condom.

Prediction: UNA over UWG 42-10
