SIAC fans are still talking about the great game at the Albany Coliseum last Saturday. The Division 2.com then 12th ranked Golden Rams of Albany State University defeated the then ranked 24th Wingate Bulldogs by a score of 49-28. Although, ASU took a 20-0 halftime lead, the Bulldogs did not feel they were ever completely out of the game with pre-season All-American honorable mention Cody Haffly at the helm at QB. Haffly has an uncanny ability to bring his team from behind during most challenges. This day however, belonged to the Golden Rams and their defense would stand tall, bend not break, the Dirty Blue as they are most commonly known as would hold the prolific passer under 300 yards while ASU, QB Stanley Jennings would pass for over 300 yards as he pass for 4 TDs .
Head Coach Joe Reich stated after the game, "This team (ASU) is better than they were last year". Last year, ASU made it to the Division II quarterfinals losing to Division II runner-up Delta State. Reich followed up by saying, "Their wide outs are good, probably better than what we thought," "They did a great job just going up and playing the ball." Ronnie Tubbs (ASU) caught six passes for 136 yards. ASU offense is unstoppable so far this season, considering they are averaging 43 points per game. The one thing, I noticed Saturday was the communication of the offensive line, the ASU new offensive line coach has these young men talking to each other.
Surprises in the SIAC are that Tuskegee lost its home opener against (NAIA) Langston, Kentucky State University is riding an undefeated record, Fort Valley State University (FVSU) has yet to visit the win column, and Stillman is (1-1). I truly expect Morehouse, Clark Atlanta, and FVSU to solidify their mark on the conference this week with wins.
Game of the Week
ASU vs Valdosta State University
OK, the Divison2football.com earliest competitive games in the South are here. ASU vs VSU. This game in the past usually has in attendance more than 15,000 fans. I expect this year to be no different, as the #10 ASU Golden Rams face off against the #12 VSU Blazers in the Albany, Georgia coliseum. Get your ticket early, SIAC and Gulf South fans will be there early, expect standing room only, 15,000 plus. VSU will not be able to contain the explosiveness of the ASU offense. ASU defense known as the "DIRTY BLUE" will contain the Blazers, mark my word.
