LSC fans, the LSC blog is back up and running. We have had some very good weeks of football through the first 3 weeks. I think the LSC has started out to a good beginning for the season. The LSC is currently 10-2 against Non-LSC opponents. Overall, I think the competition level is up this year in the LSC.

Reflections on the first few weeks

Harlon Hill Watch
thI wanted to ask you a question about this year*s race for the Harlon Hill Award. I completely agree that Henderson State*s QB Kevin Rodgers is an outstanding QB and should be up high on the list. I wanted to ask what WTAMU*s Dustin Vaughan would have to do this season to get the Harlon Hill Award?
Joseph

[A] There is no doubt Vaughan is outstanding, as he proved to everyone in leading the Buffalos to the come-from-behind victory over Chadron State on national TV. Vaughan is definitely on my short list of candidates for the Harlon Hill.
But the reason I go with Rodgers as my favorite is due to competition level. Rodgers will not see the same quality of defenses on a week in week out basis as Vaughan will. This will likely allow Rodgers to rack up video game type numbers. As the sports information directors that vote on the award have proven in the past, they seem to care more about statistics than level of competition.
For Vaughan to win the award, he will need to at least stay in the neighborhood of Rodgers statistically, which would probably mean he probably needs to throw for around 5,000 yards and 50 touchdowns in the regular season. With 825 passing yards and 7 touchdown passes already, those numbers are not out of the realm of possibility.

Bob hit this question right on. Dustin Vaughn will face more difficult opponents than Rogers and be battling against Rogers for yards and TDs in pursuit of the Harlon Hill Trophy. At the present time, Vaughn would have a slight advantage on Rogers. Through 3 games, Vaughn has thrown for 1,333 yards with 11 TDs, a hundred more yards that Rogers. Plus, Vaughn has 0 interceptions. On the other hand, Rogers has better efficiency than Vaughn.

Lone Star Conference Week 3 RECAP

Texas A&M Commerce @ West Texas A&M

WTAMU: 62 TAMC: 28

This was a game that was circled on the calendar before the season started until the release of Don Carthel. The game still had some hype but not as much. It was great to see what Colby Carthel could do against a team that he helped build in the Buffaloes. The one thing that stood out over everything was how does a team score 62 points and hold a team to 28 points with 24 penalties for 238 yards? WT found a way to do it. WT started out down 7 points in the first 10 seconds of the game with a pass from Rollison to Vernon Johnson, for the second straight week. This duo is the real deal. Rollison and Johnson have great chemistry and speed. Johnson rivaled the WT wide receivers, going over 100 yards. Rollison was very impressive with his arm strength and pocket movement. However, WT got to him 6 times. The score stayed fairly close until the 3rd quarter. WT ran away with the game in the end of the 3rd quarter with a 100 yard kick of return from Nathan Slaughter.

Takeaways from the game:
Texas A&M Commerce is very much improved from the past few years. They play using the spread offense with a quality QB and WR duo. They will burn you on the outside route. Running game was abysmal and ineffective. Offensive line is one of the weaknesses on the team.

West Texas A&M has more talent at the receiver position than I have ever seen. They have a stud at all receiver positions and lots of quality depth. The Offensive line played better than week 1. The running game shined a few times with 3 rushing TDs. The penalties stood out the most with the lack of discipline. WT had a abnormally high amount of penalties. Similar to the older days of WT football. The team lacks discipline and needs to work on it if they want to make the playoffs.

Tarleton State @ Angelo State

Tarleton: 38 Angelo: 34Takeaways from the game:McMurry @ Texas A&M Kingsville

McMurry: 32 Texas A&M Kingsville: 52

Kingsville took off in the 1stTakeaways from the game:
Kingsville played a great game. McMurry is not an amazing team but Kingsville needed great play from their offense to show that they can still put points on the board. They need to improve in the passing game. They passed 18 times and 3 were interceptions. Those are not good numbers. On the highlight, the defense put good pressure on McMurry. I bet the Javelinas are glad to have Shackelford back in the lineup.

Midwestern State @ West Georgia

Midwestern: 38 West Georgia: 28

Midwestern was going up against a formidable opponent in West Georgia. West Georgia is much improved from last season. They were undefeated coming into this matchup. At halftime, the score was all knotted up and something had to give in the second half. After having a rough game last week, Keidrick Jackson took off against West Georgia, running for a gain of 184 yards. The Midwestern team has a lot of new players and is still adjusting at most positions. The rushing game in the 2nd half propelled the Mustangs to a win over West Georgia; a much needed win.

Takeaways from the game:
Midwestern ran the ball effectively and got a win over an improved West Georgia team. They lacked in the passing game with only 85 yards and need to improve on passing the ball around. The defense had flashes of greatness but will need to put more pressure with blitzing the QB. Defense struggled mostly in the passing game.
