The LSC had a big weekend last week. This week has only one real big matchup that is a LSC-GSC game.

Thoughts around the LSC:

-Texas A&M Kingsville is still trying to find their way in their lackluster offense. They scored 21 points in the 4th quarter last week to make the score look more reasonable against the Lions.
-Tarleton State completely shocked the LSC with their big play performance against a highly touted West Texas team. They showed that they can and will play with the best of the LSC. Coach Fowler has taken this team a long ways since taking on the head coaching duties.
-West Texas A&M showed that they have some much needed improvements to be able to finish this season strong. They had multiple players get hurt last week and will need to stay healthy to finish strong. Can they overcome the heartbreak in Stephenville? The last two games of the season will be the call on that.
-ENMU completely stunned the Angelo Rams with their amazing 2nd half performance last week. They are definitely moving in the right direction to becoming more and more competitive. What a game for the hounds. Can they keep the momentum?
-Texas A&M Commerce got a big win over the Javelinas and maintained control of the game throughout. They still continue to improve and will most likely finish this season with a winning record. Who knew that Colby Carthel could make such an impact this early?
-Angelo State took a huge hit last week with a complete 2nd half meltdown against the ENMU hounds. They proved that they still have a ways to go to being a top tier LSC team.
-Midwestern State completely ran their feet out of their shoes with one of their biggest performances of the season. We get to see if they can measure up against a great D2 powerhouse this week.

Things were shaken up this week, big time. We have 1 undefeated team left in the Lone Star Conference. There are several good games this week that we will get to watch this weekend. Currently, there are three teams ranked in the AFCA and D2football poll: #14/17 Tarleton State, #17/12 West Texas A&M, and #24/21 Midwestern State.
  1. ndndth quarter and will try to continue to build on it. They will need to find a way to stop passing offenses and eliminate the big plays. The QB position has really been a disappointment for the Javelinas, who came into the season looking at a great year. Can they find their gunslinger?

There are several good games across the LSC with several nonconference matchups on the agenda. The big statement will be to see if Midwestern can pull the upset and to see which team can step up after a big letdown: WT or Angelo?

#24 Midwestern State (4-1) (2-1) v. #8 West Alabama (5-1) Saturday, 8 p.m. Kickoff

Wichita Falls, TX Memorial Stadium
The mustangs come into this game with great momentum and will have to play a near perfect game to keep their record for adding a second loss. The mustangs are running the ball very effectively and are getting back to their power offense. They will need to throw the ball around to stay ahead of the West Alabama Tigers. The Tigers come into this game with an incredible defense that has played very well and just took down the #1 team in the country. The Tigers have only given up 500 yards on the ground all season but have been suspect in the secondary giving up 1,372 yards through the air. So, if the mustangs are going to have any chance in this one. They will need to focus on throwing the ball effectively if the Tigers shut down the mustang running game. Look for this to be a big game in division 2 football this weekend. The Mustangs were able to beat the Tigers last season but the Tigers are much improved from last year. The Tigers like to run the ball and look for their RBs to be rotating in the game trying to find the open holes in the defense. The mustangs have played good in holding potent running games by only giving up 639 yards on the season but can they shut down the highly touted Tiger run game and contend with an above average passing game? The Mustangs get their true test this weekend. I would be grateful that is one is in Wichita Falls and that the Mustangs will have the crowd behind them.

Prediction: West Alabama 38 Midwestern State 24

Angelo State (2-4) (0-2) v. #17 West Texas A&M (4-1) (2-1) Saturday, 6 p.m. Kickoff

Prediction: West Texas A&M 42 Angelo State 21

Texas A&M Commerce (3-2) (1-2) v. McMurry (1-5) Saturday, 6 p.m. Kickoff

Commerce, TX Memorial Stadium
The Commerce Lions are playing good football right now and have only lost to WT and Midwestern. They will continue to get better but I cannot see the run game being a factor which will make them one-dimensional for the rest of the season. They will face an opponent that will be similar to the game against Southeastern Oklahoma State. They will be facing their own style of offense with less big time players. McMurry has been the most efficient on the offensive side of the ball but has given a lot of points and big plays, while on the defense. They have yet to step up a truly stop any LSC team this year on the defensive side of the ball. Look for the Lions to continue to expose the McMurry secondary and pick up their third straight win of the season for their home crowd. The Lions will definitely give up some scores but they will out score the War hawks in a contest that should see a lot of points on the scoreboard.
Prediction: Texas A&M Commerce 49 McMurry 28

Texas A&M Kingsville (2-3) (0-3) v. North Alabama (3-2) Saturday, 6 p.m. Kickoff

Florence, AL Braly Municipal Stadium
The Javelinas got back on track offensively with finding ways to score with the passing game. They will hopefully start the game putting the ball in the air more and balancing it with their good running attack. They will visit the site of the D2 National Championship game to try and beat North Alabama. Can the offense do what it needs to do against a good GSC opponent? I think the bigger question is: can the Javelina defense stop North Alabama? The Lions are running the ball effectively with 1,106 yards on the season. The run defense for the Javelinas has been down this year; but, their rushing defense is definitely better than their secondary. Kingsville will have to win the battle at the line of scrimmage and force the Lions to go to their passing game. Look for a great game between the Lions and Javelinas. However, I think that the Javelinas will continue to struggle on having effective offensive drives. They have been good at times and struggled at other times. They need to be more consistent to beat the North Alabama Lions.
Prediction: North Alabama 40 Texas A&M Kingsville 21

# 14 Tarleton State (5-0) (4-0) v. Delta State (3-2) Saturday, 6 p.m. Kickoff

Prediction: Tarleton State 41 Delta State 28

LSC Trivia of the Week
Who is the current Lone Star Conference Commissioner?
Answer:
Stan Wagnon.

Commissioner Stan Wagnon is in his ninth year as a staff member of the Lone Star Conference, an 11-member NCAA Division II athletics conference with headquarters in Richardson, Texas. He was appointed in January 2007 to his current post, becoming just the second full-time commissioner in league history.
A native of Edmond, Okla., Wagnon joined the LSC as Director of Media Relations in April 2003, and then gained the title of Assistant Commissioner prior to the 2004-05 academic year. He stepped in as Acting Commissioner in January 2006 when long-time commissioner Fred Jacoby was placed on medical leave and was named Interim Commissioner in June 2006 when Jacoby retired.
Wagnon serves as chief administrative officer and primary spokesman of the Conference. He works as an advisor to each of the Conference's governance groups and is responsible for managing the budget, scheduling and arranging Conference meetings, and preparing and distributing sports schedules, in addition to planning and overseeing all daily operations for the Conference.
Wagnon came to the LSC office after working in the sports information offices at three LSC member institutions. He served as Sports Information Director at Tarleton State for nearly three years after serving four years in a similar role at Midwestern State. He held the title of Assistant Athletic Director at MSU. Before that, Wagnon was a student assistant in the SID office at Central Oklahoma.
Wagnon, 36, earned a bachelor's degree in public relations from UCO in 1995 and completed more than 30 hours of graduate work at Midwestern. He lives in Frisco, Texas, with his wife, Jill, and daughters, Abby and Macy. They are both active at The Heights Baptist Church in Richardson.
Wagnon's father, Skip, was a long-time athletic director at the University of Central Oklahoma and a 2004 inductee to the LSC Hall of Honor.
